Rhetorical Analysis: You Don’t Need More Free Time

Many people at the workplaces request for leave, time to rest and engage with the family. However, after a short time, the individual become anxious, bored, tired and restless. It is attributed to the component of a quantity of time and coordination of different activities and tasks. In Young’s article, “You Don’t Need More Free Time”, published in International New York Times, the author addresses time dynamics, which is possible through analyzing the views of different respondents. The article is based on research that Young with his colleague Chaeyoon Lim carried out and received data from more than 500,000 people. The basis of the study was to examine people’s emotions patterns and day-to-day fluctuations in emotion based on time. The emotions of employed and unemployed before were similar during the working days and soared during the weekends starting on Friday. Are the sentiments that Young present true? Is time interlinked with individual emotions?

Do people lack enough time to accomplish their activities? According to the study, the author thinks that if more time is provided for relaxing, more people will be happier (par. 1). Stress, anxiety and pressures are common in the workplaces and thinking of getting an extra free time make people believe they would have a quality of time. The view is correct if the individual is after resting or sleeping but not true when it comes to social life. The type of job and circumstances associated with the job defines the time requirements and utilization of the free time. A common saying exists that states “all work and no play make Jack a dull boy.” Therefore, an individual can allocate his time based on the job and the opportunities of free time between the jobs but does not have means to accomplish the “play” part. The assertion of extra free time is appropriate if the individual is pursuing other non-work related activities, such as participating in leisure activities or community-based activities, such as assisting the less advantaged in the society. Therefore, the quantity of time depends on the use of extra time based on the requirements and expectations of an individual.

The author further states that “work-life balance” cannot be achieved through an individual approach (par. 2). The employed and unemployed face stress and anxieties during the week due to numerous factors such as job requirements and searching for jobs. These individuals are anxious for the weekend because the “work” life is changed because of “network good.” Young defines network good as free time in which other people have free times. For example, the unemployed remains at home or continue searching and applying for jobs throughout the week while the employed work throughout the week. The unemployed does not have the time to play or even to associate. The only time these individuals meet each other is during the weekends where they can spend social life together. An individual cannot enjoy free time alone and requires participation and coordination from other individuals. For example, a parent needs kids to go out and play, while the loved ones need partners to enjoy their free time. Therefore, coordination through networked good is important. However, the level and extend of coordination depends on the socioeconomic of the individuals. People from different socioeconomic positions may face challenges while interacting limiting the fundamentals of free time. Hence, individuals from similar socioeconomic settings are better placed to utilize effectively their free time.

The author does not discuss the presence of technology in influencing free time and coordination of activities. The weekends define free time and coordination but during the week, technology can be used to accomplish the communication and social requirements. For example, posting pictures and participating in online games may not need free time or wait until the weekend. The aspect of free time and weekend differs based on individuals and utilization of the free time. The time requirements of a married individual are different from individuals who are courting.

To some extent, Young views and perspectives are true, but the inclusion of technology would have presented an interesting outcome. Free time is associated with engaging with the family, non-work related activities, and social life. However, technology can be used to achieve the requirement: the scheduling of time may even prevent the use of technology. For example, numerous companies limit the use of social media while playing online games require other individuals to compete with. The quantity of time is not important rather, the use of the available free time and synchronizing the free time with others resulting in network good or collaboration. Nobody can use free time exclusively for long without requiring the contribution of others; for example, watching football needs other supports.
