  1. The History of Caristas Australia

Caristas Australia has a rich history tracing back to the times when human aid was not given attention. The organization started with just man who believed in the equality for everyone. By 1897, a humble man from Germany Lorenz Werthmann founded the first Caritas to take care of socio-economic challenges people were going through. Caritas was chosen to represent the care, love and compassion it intended to extend to the less fortunate in the society. Currently, Caristas Australia stands to be one of the largest aid and development agencies in the world.

  1. Individuals and Groups Assisted by Caristas Australia

Caritas Australia has over 170 long-term development projects across the globe that aims to assist people from different socio-economic backgrounds. In particular, the organization is concerned with women, children, the disabled, victims of natural disasters such as the Nepal incident, victims of war and social injustices. Currently, Caristas Australia has been concerned with the advocacy and protection of rights and welfare of the indigenous peoples whose social justices is seemed to be limited or infringed.

  1. Ways in which Caristas Australia Assist People

The organization assists people on the following ways:

  • Coordinate and help Australian women with a passion for social justice

  • Educating less fortunate in the society

  • Taking care of the orphans

  • Building projects such as water towers for community

  • Helps in creation of social facilities and amenities such as toilets

  • Giving financial aid to the need and ill-health

  • Giving food and to victims of disasters among others

Caristas Australia fulfills their missions by having individuals taking part as volunteers. The organization receives approximately 2000-4000 volunteers annually who take part in different activities of the organization. Secondly, there have been donations from individuals that go to the fulfillment of the missions. These range from goods, properties to cash donations.

The action plan will entail volunteering in Caristas Australia specially, with food banks, national, regional and local sensitization to bolster social and economic development of the less fortunate.

To understand and bridge economic gap that has been created social and economic injustices. Caristas Australia further offers the opportunity to comparatively structured community roles, or a combination of both cases. This mission is embedded on Gospel passage that, “If your brother becomes poor and cannot maintain himself with you, you shall support him as though he were a stranger and a sojourner, and he shall live with you. Take no interest from him or profit, but fear your God, that your brother may live beside you.” This mission is further based on Catechism that ‘the dignity of the human person implies and requires uprightness of moral conscience’

Caristas Australia mainly depends on donations from well-wishers or organisations or companies who have the needy at heart. These people often feel that donation is the best platform through which one could describe positive impact of volunteering. Secondly, Caristas Australia get support from Not for Profit Organisations who want to understand the actual challenges and historical injustices that a given community has been exposed to.
