Perceived Causes and Solutions of the Issue of Homelessness in Research
Today, homelessness is a pervasive problem facing not only the poor or developing nations, but rich countries as well like the United States and United Kingdom. In most researches about the issue of homelessness, the emphasis has been placed upon the identification of the root causes and how the problem may be solved or eradicated. Although this researcher agrees to these studies which underline the very essence of finding a sustainable solution to the social illness called homelessness, they neglect or for some reason, very few have touched the aspect of examining the gap between the perceived causes and solutions to this social malaise. In a more explicit manner, this paper seeks to find the answer to the question ‘what next’ for homelessness studies.
Among the common perceived causes of homelessness were attributed to the broadening poverty and economic uncertainties, as macro-level factors. In another level, other more commonly cited causes include substance use disorders, mental illnesses, unemployment and low wages. Domestic violence and family breakdown are also increasingly causing the perceived problem of homelessness. Solutions being proposed are generally attributed to service providers and policy makers’ response such as government welfare funding, social services and programs supporting the homeless. Job assistance affordable housing and construction of housing can also be counted as among the solutions.
The perceived causes and solutions of homelessness has been tackled, discussed and debated by numerous sectors, and have in the past three decades been receiving considerable coverage from the media. So far, the perception gap in dealing about this issue has grown enormously that finding out whether it have benefited or aggravated the problem may perhaps be identified through homelessness researches.
As this paper proposed a thorough examination on the perception gap, this researcher will first thresh out a definitive and convenient, if not an absolute, definition of terms, such as ‘homelessness’ and ‘being homeless.’ Insofar as this proposed research is concerned, studies that sets to find the answer to our dilemma, it can better address some of the research problems encountered by past studies. As a result, it is expected that more homelessness studies would be opened up to a more diverse set of questions that would move future research towards a more explicit theory of the perception gap hence towards more productive relations between issue-based researches and other domains of the society.
To better understand the problem and bridge the perception gap, this research proposal is set to use the qualitative research method. To understand common perception, there will be semi-structure personal interview to be conducted to social and cultural researchers, service providers, members of the academia who are concerned with homelessness studies. and media studies experts. To ensure validated and credible results, there will be steps to be taken to valid the instrumentation to use and that the consultation with the supervisor will be a constant part of the methodology. This researcher find no ethical constraints that the project may face toward the completion of the effort through the analysis of the findings. In the final analysis, all care will be considered and observed to arrived at a systematic, logical and productive research output thus encouraging future research in constrained areas that this paper admits may still encounter as it implements the methods of research.
