The purpose of this paper is to determine the best drinks for healthy kids aged from four to eight. The first section of the paper will start with a comprehensive review of literature that entails the advantages and disadvantages of “Nutrient water” consumption by the age group. The second section will then review of literature about the advantages and disadvantages of cow’s milk consumption by the same age group. The third section of the study is the conclusion, which indicates that nutrient water has limited nutrients compared to cow’s milk which is rich in protein, magnesium, and calcium. Finally, the study recommends that more research should be done in this subject as there are remarkably few research findings.
Advantages and Disadvantages of “Nutrient Water”
One of the known advantages about nutrient water is that is contains essential nutrients for the body. An average bottle of nutrient water has 50 to 100 per cent of the daily requirements of various vitamins (Caffarelli et al, 2010). Since nutrients such as vitamins make up a significant part of the diet of 2-6 year olds, this is then considered to be an attractive feature of nutrient water. If parents are contemplating over giving their kids nutrient water instead of soda, then it is advisable to give nutrient water. This is because nutrient water has almost half the carbohydrates and calories of soda, and that soda lacks the wide vitamin assortment. Therefore, kids benefit more when they consume nutrient water, rather than soda. Nevertheless, it is important to note that the disadvantages of nutrient water exceed its advantages, and a major concern is that it poses a lot of health risks in kids, as shown by research.
Researchers in America believe that nutrient water contribute to the growing number of cases of childhood obesity, since it has a high concentration of fructose (Caffarelli et al, 2010). Other studies show that consuming sweetened beverages could depress the immune system of kids, even though the parent seeks to prevent this (Milletic, 2011). Furthermore, nutrient water might also harm the teeth of kids in the said age group. According to medical journals, acidic beverages such as nutrient water lead to the erosion of dental enamel (Intagliata, 2011). This is because Vitamin C (whose chemical term is ascorbic acid), is among the vitamins added to nutrient water, is deemed to be acidic (Caffarelli et al, 2010).
The nutrients will function in a better way in the whole body of the kids. In order to demonstrate this further, when vitamins E and C are consumed together in the food of healthy kids, for instance green leafy vegetables such as spinach, the effect on the health of the kids is much better than when eaten individually, for example vitamin C in nutrient water (Milletic, 2011). This shows that food provides the entire package of required nutrients in the body of kids. However, nutrient water will only provide limited nutrients for healthy kids, which might not be very effective as those consumed in foods. Therefore, parents seek other alternatives such as cow’s milk, in the bid to get the best nutrients for their kids.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Cow’s Milk
Milk is seen as a better alternative of nutrient water to kids aged between two to six. Milk is also commonly termed as ‘nutrient dense’ since a small portion has great amounts of nutrients as compared to the other choices of drinks (Black et al, 2002). Therefore, kids can get a great deal of nutrients from consuming milk. The nutrients that are of benefit to the health of kids, and are present in milk include calcium, protein, and magnesium. These nutrients are beneficial in that they aid in the development of healthy and strong bones and teeth (Guiseppe, 1998).
For the body of human beings to absorb calcium, it requires magnesium. It can be seen that milk makes this process of absorption an easy task as it contains both of these essential nutrients required for strong formation of bones. Cow’s milk provides these essential nutrients all in one drink. The milk that contains reduced fats should be given to children above the age of two (Black et al, 2002). This is because they have all the nutrients that are full in cream milk, but reduced contents of saturated fats. It is beneficial for kids to consume more cows’ milk particularly before puberty. This is because it has positive impacts on the development of bones. A balanced consumption of cow’s milk, together with vitamin C, D and A is what is required for kids to develop healthy bodies.
Cow’s milk has been linked to degenerative and chronic conditions. In kids aged two to six, nutritionists state that cow’s milk causes flu and colds, ear infections, excess mucous, diarrhea, and allergies (Black et al, 2002). Allergies to cow’s milk as well as its products are very common in kids between the age of four and eight, and they thus experience behavioral problems, or fatigue (Guiseppe, 1998). It therefore means that cow’s milk can result in great discomfort in kids.
The health conditions caused by cow’s milk are increasing especially among kids due to the desire to attain a balanced diet. The most common condition caused by cow’s milk in kids is childhood obesity. The proteins found in cow’s milk are not the same as those in human milk. This is because they result in problems with digestion, intolerance, weakened absorption of certain nutrients, as well as autoimmune reactions (Rampersaud et al, 2003). The high amount of protein in cow’s milk also causes problems. Another disadvantage of cow’s milk is that an increased consumption of cow’s milk results in increased osteoporosis (Rampersaud et al, 2003).
In summary, nutrient water is beneficial to kids aged between two and six, because of its readily available nutrients, such as vitamin C. However, as a result of its high concentration of sugar, and absence of essential nutrients, the immunity of kids is lowered, and they develop obesity. On the other hand, cow’s milk is a better alternative to nutrient water as it is rich in a variety of nutrients such as calcium, protein, and magnesium. Research has demonstrated that the health benefits of cow’s milk are greater compared to nutrient water, as long as the milk is not consumed in large amounts. Therefore, future research should focus on experiments comparing the benefits and harm caused by nutrient water and cow’s milk in the bodies of kids.
