Curriculum Theories in Nursing


This theory is regarded the most dominant approach in the field of psychology research. One of the application of this approach is the influence on a learner’s emotional reaction. Emotional response to an occurrence or experience may be negative or positive. Moreover, bad experience is well associated with anxiety and fear. It is believed that nursing students with behavioural reinforcement which results are positive, are generally believe to be good performers. In nursing education, it is possible for a teacher to provide access to required knowledge by simply performing procedures through the use of ‘mannequins’, this is by using trial and error methods that are harmless, this will enable students to gain required skills.


Cognitive psychologists regard learning as a targeted internal process, focus on thinking, organization, understanding and consciousness. Learning in combination with understanding instead of mechanical repetition, it is argued that response relationship ought to be consistent with existing knowledge or previous experience so that it can create new awareness. Educators in nursing can use this approach in training sessions in order for them to be identified as a whole and not as a collection of discrete facts. For instance, if a session is connected about the functions and structure of the respiratory tract disorder and daily life activities, it is easy for the student to understand the physiology and anatomy, the state of the disease and the effect of the patient as a whole rather than three different unrelated parts (Schober 2006, Bryant et al 2004).


In constructive theory, the objective reality of the real world has not been transferred from the leaners head has not yet been granted and it is not assumed that the learner always keeps a vision of this world in mind through learning. Educational approach that is based on building and nurturing the tendency of learning or constructive theory ought to be emphasized on activities of the learner during construction of the knowledge which is mostly apprentice-based. Moreover, it is arguable that the best educational training methods that can arise from this theory is basically a training method that is based on exploratory learning.


In learning, humanists respect experience and feelings. This theory recognizes and acknowledges people who are not under the influence of external reinforcement or unconscious forces and with freedom of choice. It is believed that individuals have the freedom to choose what they want and as well as getting around their situations in order for them to develop mental capacity. In nursing, teachers ought to give students the freedom to learn and as they may wish to do so (Aliakbari 2015).


This school of thought entirely relates to how learners should evaluate issues concerning their medical training and not necessarily what to think concerning the some issue. In learning, teachers employ this theory in training learners on how problems are viewed from the medical point of view and ways in which they ought to be approached (Scheckel 2009).
