Medicalisation of Society
Medicalisation is a process in which a great deal of day to day life has found itself coming under medical influence, supervision and dominion. This means that every aspect of live is now determined by medicine, which is the modern man, is like he is under the spell of medicine. Health professional and doctors have the authority of diagnosing, preventing, treating or studying this medical condition. Instead of using social model, doctors tend to use disability medical model to treat the condition (Conrad, 2007, p.3).
Medicalisation of the society is how the society as a whole has come believe in the changing condition of human beings into disorders that opt to be treated. In the past fifty or so years, what was taken as common human events and normal human problems like aging, birth, alcoholism, obesity and menopause, are presently treated as medicinal conditions. For worse or better, there is an unprecedented use of medicine in all aspect of day to day life.
Theoretically, it is believed that the fact that nowadays, the diminishing of the medical professional impact is as a result of Medicalisation. They (medical professionals) have been replaced by biotechnical and pharmaceutical industries, HMOs, insurance companies and the consumers (the patients) as the forces behind the Medicalisation promotion (Conrad, 2007, p.10).
Deviance in sociology refers to behaviours or actions that violate norms of culture. Example of deviance includes crime, folkway rejection among others. Because it has been established that deviance is a medical condition, it can be controlled by medicine. Deviance has been controlled by medicine because it has now been seen in terms of medical terms .Medication is used to absorb the deviance of a child, in that the child is treated of sickness unlike when believed to be evil. When a grown up has been labeled a deviant, he or she can be taken to the hospital. If he or she plays the role of a sick person properly, then the deviant label is eliminated.
