Various approaches implemented in improving resource and water management in the ecosystem leads to the maintenance of clean and sustainable environment. Water sensitive urban design encompasses structuring, planning and developing water system in the urban areas in a way that they are capable of maintaining clean water systems that promotes a sustainable environment. Clean environment is maintained to ensure that the environment is capable of supporting individuals’ lives. In urban water management, the type and design of drainage are very critical aspects since water drainage systems determines water flows and various components that are used in different water sensitive urban designs. Canadian lakes possess various designs approaches used in the water sensitive designs and possess various elements and components. Lack of good waste management approaches in certain areas leads to health related issues which affects the living conditions of individuals around such locations. Maintenance of proper drainage system is also influenced by the design approach used in designing water urban designs for the lakes.

Purpose and scope of Report:

The aim and objective of this paper is to explore water sensitive designs used in the Canadian Lakes. The scope of the report seeks to establish various components used in the designs. The analysis is to determine whether the designs used are the best approaches in ensuring a clean and sustainable environment for human and animal inhibition. Consequently, the paper tends to describe various drainage components and their functions in water sensitive urban designs to determine various issues in maintenance that might compromise water quality.

Drainage Design Philosophy:

The drainage design philosophy in the Canadian lakes is based on the amount of water flowing and generated at the time of urbanization. This is done by analyzing the amount of water drained prior to urbanization and after the period of urbanization to determine water flow. The amount of storm water produced prior and after urbanization is critical in the drainage designs. This is true since storm water has a great effect on the existing natural habitat and impacts environmental quality. Thus, it is important to maintain and manage the quality and quantity of storm water in the environment. From various visited sites, it was clear that such sites had low probability of flooding. Additionally, the designs encompass a system that supported storm water runoffs and drainage. Thus, the design has various components such as wetlands, grass swales and basins. Hence, the Canadian lake estate uses storm water management system approach.

Design Components:

The Canadian lake water sensitive urban designs components entails various systems such as drainage pipes, Grass swales and pits, grated pits and bio-retention systems. The main components of WSUD are Local streets. The figure below illustrates how typical street works in water sensitive urban designs.

Grass swales are often used in retaining water and managing storm water in the environment. Swale is built of various vegetations in a way that it assumes certain shapes that are capable of managing storm water in the habitat. Additionally, swales are also used in slowing down runoffs that may cause destruction of the habitat. Swales reduce the flow of water and enables water to seep in to the ground and filter pollutants contained in the running water. Grass swales also act as a drainage tunnels during rainy seasons where they transfer runoffs to the underground systems.

Constructed Wetlands:

Constructed wetlands are artificial constructed sites used in restoring the habitat which acts as shallow points for collecting water. They are often used to enhance filtration and sedimentation of water pollutants. Wetlands are constructed depending on the size of use.

Bio-Retention Systems:

Bio retention systems are used to retain water and prevent water from causing problems or being wasted. Bio retention systems encompass bio-retention swales found at the bottom of swales. The swales act as stormwater filtration system and treatment. Also, bio retention system offers flow retardation during rainfall. Other than bio-retention swales, there exist bio-retention basins that act like bio-retention swales; the only difference is that is that they lack conveyance functions. Bio-retention filter pollutants have filters that are very sensitive to the clogging materials. Hence, proper maintenance of bio-retention basins is critical.

Rainwater Tanks:

Rainwater tank are strategically located in places where they can easily collect rainwater from roof tops and runoffs. The water collected is used for several purposes. Rainwater tanks are responsible for preventing flooding since they provide temporary storage and limits stormwater pollution. Moreover, rainwater tanks have filter materials that helps in purification and filtration of water to ensure clean water.

Drainage Design Components:

Drainage design has several components that promote proper and adequate functioning and management of the design system. The components encompass plastics used to make rainwater tanks and plastic tanks used to collect runoff waters. The tanks have inlets that enable free flow of water to the system. Again, there exists ventilation that provides proper water quality since it reduces the growth of Aerobic bacteria that can contaminate water. Thus, sewers, pipes, tanks and other water systems are often well ventilated to ensure free circulation of water and to prevent possible accumulation of toxic substances that can contaminate water. Sewers entail various durable components such as verified clay, PVCs and iron. These components are cast in different shapes to offer strength. Albeit, manholes are normally left to provide easy access to the system and ensure proper and adequate management and repair of the drainage systems. The quality of water is influenced by the choice of materials. Thus, materials chosen need to last longer and should not be corrosive to provide quality water management.

Management and maintenance Issues:

The quality of water in our water ways and creeks are of high quality due to the improved quality of stormwater leaving the Canadian lakes. Issues of poor management can only be avoided through proper management of stormwater. For instance, poor management of storm water led to increased flooding which led to the carrying away of properties, washing away cars, blocking roads and increasing the rate of pollution. Additionally, it damages stream banks it increases maintenance costs. Consequently, there need to be a sewer system backup that can reduce the effects of poor maintenance and repair of the drainage system. The laws and rules of the country in relation to the environmental sustainability controls proper management of water management systems and drainage systems. State agencies and the local authorities ensure that environment is free from pollution and the housing facilities made available through sustainable development.

Conclusion:

WSUD involves planning and structuring of the urban water system in a way they are capable of maintaining clean water systems. This facilitates clean environment. The design of the WSUD relies on the design approach of the environment and the ecosystem. Different designs can be used to obtain quality water management in the Canadian lakes. For instance, WSUD encompasses the use of grass swales, rainwater tanks, bio-retention systems, grate pits and drainage pipes. The quality of water is often determined by the components of the drainage pipes. Poor quality materials lead to poor management and contamination of water. Poor management and maintenance of stromwater blocks roads, cause damage to properties, causes over flooding of lakes and sweep away cars. Thus, state agencies and relevant authorities should ensure that all the drainage system conforms with the set laws and rules to ensure sustainable water provision to the citizens.
