The development of visual motor skills in childhood and its relationship with attention

Visual motor skills are the abilities associated with an individual’s body movement control based on what one can identify through sight (Carlson, Rowe, & Curby 2013). It involves eye movements. The motor behaviors include touching, grasping and reaching out to something at a certain distance. Visual motor skills are developed in childhood as a child begins to make some eye movements that are linked to the activities and movements conducted by a person who is close to him or her. Besides, the skills are linked to a child’s attention since one’s motor ability influences his or her focus (van der Fels, te Wierike, Hartman, Elferink-Gemser, Smith, & Visscher, 2015). Therefore, the motor systems engage in good communication with the visual systems because what a child sees affects his or her movements, therefore the development of visual motor skills. In addition, as a child develops the ability to move towards what he/she can see hence helping in increasing attention to the things pursued to get hold of.

In handwriting, the visual motor skills are developed the moment a child starts to learn how to write whereby he or she looks keenly at what he or she is required to write, therefore the personal attention. In addition, the child’s attention shifts from one place to another based on the movement of objects (Williams, Omizzolo, Galea, & Vance, 2013). There is a relationship between personal attention and the development of visual motor skills given that a child connects closely to the objects that are changing their position. Hence, attention is gained as a child learns to make movements in response to the visual cues of personal sight.
