4Conflicting perspectives: ‘Julius Caesar’ and ‘Lord of the Flies’

Conflicting perspectives within texts provide challenge to the perception of history of the audience through alternative and interesting viewpoints of personalities, situations and events. Composers use careful choice of presentation in order to study the way these perspectives generate provocative and diverse insights into people and past events. As a result this alters how the audience understands these. “Julius Caesar” by William Shakespeare and “Lord of the flies” by William Golding represent the conflicting perspectives surrounding people. For instance, in Caesar, Shakespeare applies dramatic form in order to present Caesar’s different opinions, generating different insights in regard to the public opinion and its impact on the political situation. Thus, in both texts, the perspective of the audience is successfully influenced in regard to the personalities and the events through viewpoints and opinions presented.

In regard to Shakespeare, he manipulates dramatic form in order to communicate various opinions and attitudes about the leadership of Caesar in Rome. Caesar is the title character but he has less stage appearance and less dialogue as compared to other key personalities such as Antony, Brutus and Cassius. However, throughout the play, the perspectives of Antony, Brutus and Cassius are represented strongly in order to highlight their differing opinions in the events of the play. For instance, Cassius appears to be angered by the growing power of Caesar as it is revealed by his comments to Brutus. Cassius states: “like a Colossus, Caesar bestrides the narrow world and the petty men walk under his huge legs”. Through metaphorical language, Shakespeare creates provocative images of Caesar revealing the strong discontent of Cassius with power politics. However, unlike Cassius, the personal opinion of Brutus does not form his perspective of the leadership of Caesar. As a result, these different perspectives provide different insights of Caesar. In this way, Shakespeare explores the conflicting perspectives surrounding Caesar in a cleverly manner, revealing different issues and viewpoints surrounding his death (Shakespeare, 2004).

Like Shakespeare, Golding has also presented the conflicting perspectives of the society by generating diverse insights into personalities. In the novel, Golding uses the progress of the boys, that is, Ralph, Jack and Piggy on the island as an early human development metaphor. The first achievement of the boys is building a fire which brings the entire group of boys together in awe and wonder, just like conch shell. Golding uses these developments to show that the island is developing into a society which mirrors Western democratic culture. The conch shell used is available to all and authorises its holder to speak. However, the freedoms of this Island are decided by authority because Ralph decides the one to get the possession of the conch. Although Ralph is a benevolent leader, there is an implication that democracy is still dependent on its leaders for justice. The makeshift government sparks dissent and debate like any other democratic system. However, Piggy and Jack have different perspectives in regard to what particular ends the rule of Ralph will serve. For Ralph, he takes a rational perspective in regard to the ideas of justice. That is, the boys will be allowed to live fairly by the rules. Jack on the other hand, regards to the rules as a means for punishment and control, a reflection of his tendency towards violence and dictatorial ethos. Piggy presents the most intelligent personality of the three and views rules as essential tools for survival. He also views all the aspects of the behaviour of the boys in regard to whether they will contribute to their rescue. In this way, Golding explores the conflicting perspectives surrounding the boys in the island (Golding, 1958).
