Introduction

There is significance increase in tourism industry that have formed pillars of global’ economies. This is due to political cooperation and social changes that have met technological advancement involving both communication and infrastructures sectors. The global technology advertisements have now surpassed the traditional way of advertising that involved word of mouth which was primary source for tourism industry. Now travelers search tourists’ products online and also their preferred destinations to visit (UNWTO, 2011). Tourism can be defined as travel mostly for business needs, leisure or either for recreational purposes. It can also be defined as people traveling and living outside their normal environment less than one year for purposes of; business or leisure. Tourism has become very popular for leisure all the world in order people to relax or to gain experience in their business. Tourism has become major foreign earners in many countries and in turn boosted their economies. Technology can be defined as modifying, using and applying knowledge of tools, techniques and also experiences in order solve a particular problem (UNWTO, 2011). Technology helps people to adapt and control their natural environment in the world. This is evident in the tourism sector. This essay will look at importance of technology in tourism by looking at GDS and CMS technologies that have been utilized in the sector.

The needs for technology in the tourism sector have increased tremendously over the past years. The use of World Wide Web (www) has greatly offered tourism industry great advantage in their operations all over the world. Due to easy access of internet by many people all over the world, it has been easy to use website in advertising the businesses. The introduction of destination marketing organization (DMO) has helped organizations and businesses to achieve their goals and missions by integrating them to information technology (IT). The use of ancient method of advertising in the tourism industry has been reformed in order to meet the rapid change of technologies and bring out its capability for the business advantage (Anand & Deepa, 2005). For some tourist sectors, there have been difficulties to meet the new trend in technology advancement in order to cater consumers. This is due to lagging behind the market changes due to globalization. Despite the rise in technology, some tourism business continues to struggle in order to meet technological advancement due to shortages of finance to meet the technology needs.

Accordingly, high use of advanced technology have been in use on tourism sector all over the world to distribute and advertise tourism products and also arming the tourism personnel’s and guides with new ideas (Anand & Deepa, 2005). These technologies have been vital in satisfying the high demand of tourism products which keeps on changing. The role played by the technology to help the facilitators cannot be underestimated. Tourist intermediaries play an important role through use of computers to serve their customers in a technologic form known as computer reservation systems (CMS). The other technology used by these operators is use of Group Decision Support System (GDS), which is an electronic meeting system. GDS is used in distributing the reservations and useful information all over the world to meet their consumer. The difference between the two technologies is that CRS is used to sell or advertise the services through hotels where mostly used by tourists and the airlines while GDSs advertises or distribute reservations more than single CRS to travelling agents who are usually the users. GDSs have facilitated tourism industry in various ways such as clearing of custom duties in the country, issuance of visa cards and also in immigration check ups (Anand & Deepa, 2005).

According to (Anand & Deepa, 2005), the component and requirement of tourist industry includes; advertising, accommodation, attraction and transport. Advertising sector includes all the advertising methods such as mass media, internet and publications. Accommodation sector includes the establishment, offering of lodging and ensuring the visitors welfare and safety. Attraction sector involves all manmade and natural sectors that attract visitors to come and satisfy their needs, this includes recreation and research needs. Transport sector involves the means which visitors’ uses during travelling which include air, road transport and water.

Transport sectors facilitate tourists to reach their attraction sectors and it is major sector in tourism industry. Transport sector acts as a linkage from residences tourists’ destinations. Before making travel arrangements tourists establishes good travelling platform that assures them safety. For example if they are using air transport they ensure there are good communications facilities in the craft being used by the controllers. This helps to in providing useful information ranging from weather, information to pilots during emergencies and the altitudes. Also there are video entertainment in air transport that are results of rapid increasingly technology. Many countries that have good tourisms department utilize efficient and effective means of transports for their visitors. For example, in road transport vehicles are equipped with modern technology for communications such as use of radio calls for communication. Through this method drivers and tour guides regularly updates their headquarters for every destination they are and this strengthens tourists’ safety (UNWTO, 2011).

In recent years the booking services have been made easier due to mobile booking using technologies available. Moreover, mobile apps have made easier booking services that have enabled tourists to be more informed about the current world. Also researches have been easier recently due to adverts in the internet. Customers choose the best destination for them through the information in the internet. Recently due to presence of technology there have been long detailed strings of requests by customers which are very specific (UNWTO, 2011).

However there are challenges facing tourism industry which includes lack of qualified personnel that are suitable in this industry. Practically the gap between tourism and technology has narrowed down (UNWTO, 2011). Many tourism businesses have transformed into online travel agents and every tourism business should adopt this advancement to become successful.

Conclusion

There are many definitions of tourism globally. Tourism is travelling outside one’s resident to stay permanently or for a particular time. For person to travel there must be a reason which includes recreation, business purposes, education, search for medical facilities or visiting allies. Tourists choose the places to visits due to particular reasons for traveling. Transport and accommodations are very vital sectors in tourism industry because tourists require them in their arrival destinations. The tourism industry have three key sectors which includes; accommodations, transport and attraction sector. The modernized states have reached the climax in satisfying their customers for effective and efficient services by aid of technology usage. These technologies have helped customers in advertising the available products and also in scaling down customers preferences for customer choice. Information technology advancement has a great significance in tourism industry. This is due to products involved in tourism industry that requires high technology advancement to reach customers. The paper discusses the technologies that have assisted the tourism industry to grow and expand. The two technologies are; computer reservation system and GDS. The difference between the two technologies is CRS is used to sell or advertise the services through hotels where mostly used by tourists and the airlines while GDSs advertises or distribute reservations more than single CRS to travelling agents who are usually the users. By using of technology in tourism, it helps the industry to expand, attract tourists and deliver the services in time.
