Most people have a misconception that eating healthy is too expensive. You might also be harboring the same thoughts about this issue. With fluctuating food prices, with prices sometimes tending to go up, sustaining yourself and your family with decent meals might put a strain on your budget.

However, you do not have to forego nutritious foods so that you can save your money. There are numerous ways to provide your family with healthy snacks and meals whilst staying within your budget. The south Australian department of health as gladly provided some tips that will help you reduce your costs and still have a healthy diet for your family

Plan all your meals

Before visiting the grocery store, it is essential that you first plan your meals. This will prevent the temptation of impulse buying that could significantly increase your shopping expenses. In addition, it will allow you to purchase one ingredient and use it multiple times when preparing other meals other than buying ingredients for each meal as you shop.

Purchase fresh vegetables as well as fruits that are in season.

Learn about the seasonal produce that is available in the grocery store and the promotions that are on offer. When vegetables and fruits are in season, they usually cost less. Fruits and vegetables that are often the cheapest include apples, oranges, bananas, cabbage, dark green leafy vegetables, regular carrots and green peppers. Both frozen vegetables without source and canned vegetables with no salt added are excellent options. Canned fruits are also low cost options that a healthy.

Milk, cheese and yogurt

Buy low fat or fat free milk, yogurt and cheese in the largest size that is adequate for your family. Avoid products such grated cheese, individually wrapped strings or yogurt, which are prepared with extra processing since they will cost more as compared to generic packaging of a container of yogurt or a block cheese.

Whole grains

Regular and plain versions of oatmeal or rice are much cheaper compared to flavored or instant versions, which are usually more expensive. The plain varieties of whole grains have lower levels of sodium and added sugars. Furthermore, they are excellent staples and have a longer shelf life.

Plan for leftovers

Plan to turn leftovers into another meal. This can significantly save you some cash. The leftovers can be frozen and utilized in creative ways like using them as toppings for baked potatoes or omelet
