Foremost, Not every problem in the organization needs change, most arise from failure to implement existent policies consequently consistency is preferred to flexibility. Secondly, in response to a leader always open to incorporating employee’s ideas, a better leader would have incorporated the employee’s ideas from the start avoiding low morale and arising discrepancies in attaining the set goals. The constant investigation and probing for new ideas often distracts from implantation of existent proven ideas. Additionally, an efficient leader understands improvement is primarily customer-oriented in terms of increasing satisfaction

Lastly, in competitive markets a distinction between new products and setting up a new organizational structure needs to be made. Developing new products does not necessarily lead to changing existent organizational leadership principles and a leader is not required to change existent organizational objectives. Experience is the most critical trait of an effective leader is the modern organization requiring integration of different divisions and aspects in attaining set objectives. As aforementioned, it’s often the over-emphasis on the new that derails implementation of existent and proven policies.

I disagree with the notion that an effective leader must anticipate and promote change. An effective leader is one who exhibits consistency and principle given that change does not equal progress. When an organization has time-tested policies and structures that produce successful results, change is not prudent. If the leader is primarily change oriented, there is risk of losing employee morale and customer satisfaction in the adjustment period. Additionally, activity does not equal productivity and constant change should not be confused with continuous improvement. Another important consideration is the price of change. A prudent leader realizes there is opportunity cost for every change and analyses the cost-benefit ratio of the possible change. Lastly, not all industries are uncertain and require constant change. Effective leaders are able to lead organizations successfully in such industries by adhering to established objectives and policies. Their emotional intelligence is evident in the ability to assist employees integrate and focus fully on attaining existent policies.
