Six Minutes Walk Test

Total percentage body fat

The total percentage body fat has an impact on the distance covered by the individuals during the six minutes walk test. Among the healthy adults, the individuals with a higher percentage of body weight cover shorter distances as compared to those with low fat percentage. This is because the individuals with low fat percentage covered longer distance during the test. This is an indication that higher percentage of body fat has a negative impact on the physical functioning of the individuals among the adults. Most adults with excess fat cannot perform most of the physical exercises as the fats inhibit their performance (Murthy, et al, 2010). It also contributes to the individuals getting tired easily when performing physical exercises. This is because the adults with higher percentage of fat are not muscular. The development of muscles is affected by the excess fats among the adults and hence affecting their performance in physical activities. The results of the 6 minutes test therefore means that the healthy adults with higher percentage of body fats require intervention measures. This is for the purposes of reducing the percentage of fats and hence enabling them to perform the physical activities. However, the adults with low percentage of body fats do not require interventions as they can easily perform the physical activities. It is also evident from the test that higher percentage of body fats has a negative impact on the health of the individuals (Alameri, et al, 2009).

Muscle mass

During the 6 minutes walk test, the muscle mass mainly refers to the density of the skeletal, cardiac and smooth muscles. Among the adults, the individuals with large muscle mass perform well during the test. They cover longer distances as compared to those with low muscle mass. This is attributed that the large mass muscle mass ids attribute to some physical training. Individuals with larger muscle mass always work out as compared to those who do not. It is for this reason that they are able to perform the test comfortably as they are used to physical exercises. The ability of the body to store facts is usually inhibited by performing exercises which results to the development of muscles. The body can also endure intensive training due to the development of high muscle mass. On the other hand, the circulation of blood is enhanced when an individual has a high percentage of muscle mass (Willis, et al, 2005). Although the 6 minutes test is not strenuous, the individuals with large muscle mass are still advantageous during the test. This is also because they are used to physical activities and hence the ease of the 6 minutes walk test. Metabolism is also increased through exercises which ensure that a high amount of fat is burnt in the process. This enhances the health of the individuals. The results of the 6 minutes walk test therefore indicate that physical exercises are important to adults as it enhances the development of the muscles (Newman, 2003).

Waist Circumference

The circumference is regarded as the most accurate measure of determining the distribution of body fats among the individuals. It is also associated with the mortality and morbidity of the individuals (Burke, 2010). This is also proved in the 6 minutes walk test. The morbidity of adults is greatly affected by the waist circumference. Adults with a higher waist circumference are less mobile and hence affecting their performance in the 6 minutes walk test. This is true for both adult men and women. Healthy individual adults with less waist circumference perform better in the 6 minutes walk test as compared to those with a high waist circumference. This is also an indication that both men and women with high waist circumference waist require intervention. The main intervention is aimed at reducing the waist circumference. This can also be achieved through physical exercises among the individuals and also reducing the consumption of junky food in their diets. The wais circumference is closely associated with high body fat percentage. The situation is more common among women as compared to men. However it is also evident from the 6 minutes walk test that both men and women are affected equally by the high waist circumference (Dagan, et al, 2007).

Body Mass Index

The body mass index is used to measure the body shape of the individuals based on their weight and height. In order to obtain the body mass index of individuals, their mass in kilograms is divided by their height in meters. According to the health experts, an individual with less than 18.5 body mass index is considered to be underweight while an individual with more than 25 is considered to be overweight (Gibbons, 2001). The body mass index of healthy adults has a direct impact on the 6 minutes walk test. The individuals with a body mass index of more than 25 perform poorly in the 6 minutes walk test. This is attributed to their percentage of body fat as well as the waist circumference. The result is the same for both men and women. On the other hand, the adult individuals with less than 18.5 also perform poorly in the test (Sherrill, 1998). This can be attributed to the low muscle mass in such individuals. It is thus evident from the test that being underweight or overweight has a negative impact on the health of the individuals. Intervention measures are thus required for the adults with very high body mass index as well as those with low body mass index.

Weight is closely associated with the body mass index. This is because the total body weight is used to determine whether and individual is underweight or overweight (Iwama, et al, 2009). However it is important to note that the body weight is not accurate when it comes to the 6 minute walk test. This is because some individuals perform well in the test despite having a higher weight as compared to others wit low body weight. This can be attributed to the muscle mass as most adults with larger muscle mass perform well in the test despite having higher body weights. On the other hand, it is also important to note that most of the individuals with high body weight but low muscle mass perform poor in the test. This is also the same for the individuals with low body weight and low muscle mass. It is this important to note that various factors have to be considered when weight is used for analysis during the 6 minutes walk test. A combination of factors leads to the accuracy of the test as compared to using the weight parameter alone. The 6 minute walk test can also be used to determine the intervention measures for individual adults based on their weights.

Waist Hip Ratio

The waist hip ratio refers to the ratio of the waist to that of the hips. A ratio of 0.8 is recommended for women and 0.9 for men. The waist hip ratio is also important in terms of determining the distribution of fat among the individuals. The 6 minutes walk test is also affected by the waist hip ratio in both men and women. Women with a hip waist ratio of more 0.8 perform poorly in the test. This is due to the indication that the distribution of fat in the waist is more and hence affecting the morbidity of the individuals. As such they end up covering shorter distances during the 6 minutes walk test. This is also applicable for men who have a waist hip ratio of more than 1. However, the performance of women with a hip waist ratio of 0.6 to 0.8 is good as the ratio indicates that the distribution of fat across the waist is low and hence the good performance. Men with a waist hip ratio of 0.9 to 1 also perform well in the test and hence an indication of low fat distribution across the waist. It is thus evident that the waist hip ratio has a direct effect on the 6 minute walk test (Ketel, 2007).
