The story of “The Sufi Making Pilgrimage to Mecca”, the moral lesson one can learn is that we should not always try to show that we are better than others are by becoming judgmental or critical of others (Chittister 46-56). The Imam did not take his time to understand the weariness of the Sufi and immediately assumed that the Sufi was a disgrace for lying down at the time of prayer with his feet pointing toward God. God is everywhere, and thus the Sufi countered the Imam by challenging him to point his feet toward the absence of God.

The story is very relevant to my day-to-day life and interaction where one is normally tempted to be overly critical of others (Chittister 61-70). We are more often than not judgmental and consider ourselves better than our peers, neighbors, and strangers. The story of “The Sufi Making Pilgrimage to Mecca” is a sharp reminder that we always remain humble and to practice restraint. I had personally had a related experience when a friend judged and criticized me based on my poor grades in Math. She did not fully understand the genesis of my failure to score better grades since I was just getting used to the separation of my parents.

The story about the elder and his Quran teaches the strength of faith as practiced by the Elder. His disciples were, however, lacking in aggression to expand their knowledge by questioning what was contained in the Quran (Chittister 106-127). Many a times, every one of us has assumed some details in life and wasted opportunities that are only bound to come only once in life. It leaves me quite reassured in my faith, believing that with it, we can overcome many obstacles in our lives.
