The Most Important Skill for a Leader is the Ability to Communicate
In business, leaders must lead and motivate their workers and to get them to produce good outcomes. Communication needs to be in the workplace for the workers to know what they are required to do. Leaders must understand that their employees will buy into the leader before they buy into the vision because their opinions are critical to an organization’s success (Gore 2014). In this essay, the paper demonstrates that leaders who communicate well are effective, a situation that makes communication the most important skill for leaders.
Leaders need to know their business because such knowledge allows them to communicate effectively to their workers (Bersin 2012). According to Bersin (2012), a broad understanding and expertise of the business allow leaders to make better decisions when communicating to their teams. Again, they become experts in the operations of the firm and can share their expertise with their teams because they have effective communications skills. Expertise in the business is established when leaders take time in their job, significant developmental assignments, and find a coach to model them. Again, they must passionately study their industry, and embark on their practice by doing what they have learned and experienced in their industry, a situation that helps them share their expertise (Bersin 2014).
Leaders need to have a good understanding of their emotional intelligence and others to communicate well (Deborah 2006). Excellent communication by a leader must cover the three main groups in a business that includes the core (strategy, writing, and speaking) and managerial skills that covers: emotional intelligence, listening, coaching, teams, and meetings. Thirdly, leaders must be effective corporate communicators as they relay an organization’s message with all internal and external stakeholders (Deborah 2006). Effective leaders excel in all the three areas of communication: core, managerial and corporate. A business becomes successful if the leadership ensures that all these areas have strong communication as they enable the managers to engage all stakeholders in an organization.
Communication is the main skill that people believe is requirement for leadership (Gore 2014). How employees feel about their boss can affect company performance because they build their confidence in the leadership of the organization. Leaders instill that confidence when they communicate effectively and the workers buy into them before they can buy into an organization’s vision (Gore 2014). Opening communication with employees gets them to trust their managers and follow the vision of the leader. Leaders must create open communication channels that can be seen to encourage, recognize their workers and ask for their feedback through open engagements, for instance, a leadership forum. Recognition of employees and their contributions is a critical component of effective communication for leaders in an organization (Gore 2014). Such practices are important because they build personal communication in the workplace and ensure that employees can engage their leaders openly, honestly, and share their experiences on what should be improved in the business.
It is clear that communication plays a critical role in leadership. Leaders should work on how they communicate to ensure that they possess the relevant skills to start the communication process with their employees in the future. Therefore, leaders should address the following issues to be effective communicators. They must know their business well and become experts in their processes. Secondly, they need to have a good understanding of their emotional intelligence and that of others to communicate well. Thirdly, they must know that communication is the main skill that leaders must possess.
