A leader is someone who holds a senior position in work environment, and who has great powers to control and lead others. Not all leaders are great leaders, and what differentiates one leader from another are the virtues and skills possessed. Communication is one such skill that great leaders should have. This essay look at the most vital communication skills that great leaders should possess.

An effective leader should be able to motivate the staff to achieve and expand a company’s goals. By utilizing his communication skills, he should be able to attract professionals who eventually would play a key role in the organization. The professionals are then influenced to make better decisions and hence ensuring the organizational growth. Such a leader creates a working environment where people are able to express themselves freely without fear of fail. The leader also brings out the best in his staff through motivation of the employees. The key to successful leadership, thus begins with effective communication.

An effective leader can improve the production of groups and organizations. This means that the leader believes in the staff abilities and consequently delegates tasks accordingly. The leader should then be able to trust his employees with the relevant documents and information that would be able to contribute to the increase in organization’s growth in productivity. With effective leadership communication, the staff become more responsible. The leader should ensure a positive competitive environment which impacts significantly on making good solutions and solving problems easily. Strong communication skills are then a must for today’s leaders.

A leader who communicates well is able to impact on organizational performance in a positive way. First, the leader develops strategic plans and paths for the future. He then shares the plan and is able to make people see his vision and inspire them towards achieving it. Correspondingly, he/ she accepts criticism and suggestions from his staff. The leader also builds on ideas brought forward by his staff, hence helping to improve the first plan and develop it further. The ultimate key to inspiring great plans is communication.

An effective leader builds vital interpersonal relationships with the staff. Great leaders use communication to network and build personal and professional relationships. This attribute then enables them to interact with their employees and job colleagues. When working to know the staff closely, the leader is able to identify their weaknesses and their strengths and consequently capacity builds the work team. By developing them, he creates a path for them to become future leaders and consequently, they become a vital asset for the organizations. Poor communication strategies could lead to failure, while great communication skills are the most vital asset leaders can hold [ CITATION Ken06 l 1033 ].

Importantly, the leader should not just be able to communicate, but should know how to communicate well. For instance, great leaders ensure that they are able to control their pride or emotions when communicating with the staff. They ensure that all communication channels such as emails, one to one conversations, among others are open to everyone. They also communicate the vision clearly, and also give feedback[ CITATION Ken06 l 1033 ].

The discussion above shows that a leader should basically be an outstanding communicator. Whereas it is not practical to expect people to excel at everything, unfortunately for communication this is the case. Leaders need to realize that with so many people looking up to them for management and guidance, they should take everyday steps to improve in the communication field. Unclear communication on things such as roles and expectations, over communicating, inappropriate communication such as through outbursts and blaming are sample areas that leaders could work to improve on at the workplace [ CITATION Ken06 l 1033 ].
