Introduction

Almost every professional requires one to possess certain attributes either for skills discipline purposes. In order for me, as nurse, to provide quality and safe health care I therefore need to be possessive of certain graduate attributes. These graduate attributes can be categorized into skills and discipline specific. Graduate attributes that I believe are important for my nursing career based on skills are: collaboration and team working and harnessing information and communication technology skills. On the other hand those based on discipline specific are: awareness of ethics, social responsibility and cultural diversity and commitment to independent and lifelong learning (Rolfe et al 2001).

A very important and helpful skill for my nursing career is harnessing information and communication technology skills. With regards to the changing environment which is affecting every sector, it is necessary for nurse to derive other new ways of acquiring and sharing information. In order to enhance information and communication technology, I need to continually train in relation with the new technological developments taking place. For effective communication I must possess the required knowledge in the use of internet technology and communication and information systems. It is important to note that changes occurring in the world that impact, particularly, the health sector. An advantage of harnessing information and communication technology is the speed and convenience it brings with it.

Furthermore, a skill in harnessing information and communication technology will help me understand how to attain quality information through the use of new technological ways. On the other hand, not all information sourced through the internet that is relevant for my nursing career. Hence, if I acquire a skill in information and communication technology, I will be able to evaluate information acquired and select which is useful for my nursing career. Drejer (2005 p87) adds that, technology is an integration of skills, equipment and knowledge required to bring changes to materials, information and people. In the light of this, there are many positive changes that I would like to bring in the health care center. Therefore, my skill in harnessing information and communication technology will be of much help to me in bringing changes.

There are many health care areas that need high level of understanding from a nurse. Therefore, for my nursing career the most important attribute is collaboration and team working. A nurse requires diverse knowledge related to causes, prevention and treatment of any kind of health problem. In addition, collaborative attribute as a skill requires technical knowledge, man power knowledge and any other kind of knowledge relevant in the nursing career. Ralston (2006 p25) argues that, due to the many technical change occurring in the current world, there is need for every individual to possess collaborative skills. On the other hand, team working skills are important since nurses are highly engaged in provision of health care at community levels where there is a lot of work that cannot be handled by an individual. Therefore, for my nursing career I need to have skills in team working and collaborative.

Discipline Specific

An important discipline specific attribute for my nursing career is awareness of ethics, social responsibility and cultural diversity. As earlier noted, nurses are highly engaged in communities. Therefore, as a nurse, am bound to meet people with diverse views regarding social and cultural affiliations. Due to this fact, it is very important for me to be aware of ethical, social and cultural issues surrounding a particular group of people or community. As a nurse, I will be curbed with many situations requiring me to make independent ethical decisions. In addition, it is essential that I develop skills relevant for establishment of a moral character, more so in cases where the patients and their supporters are involved in coming up with ideas and views on a particular health care issue.

It is important that I have discipline specific to culture diversity when addressing health issues. This will help me understand other people’s culture, in particular the patients and avoid criticisms. In addition, it is my social responsibility to see to it that patients get the right kind of health care and medication. With awareness of ethics, social responsibility and cultural diversity, I will appreciate more the fact that I am responsible and accountable for the health and lives of people brought to me for attendance. Nurses have a professionally social responsibility to improve health through the use of current knowledge and understanding how the environment and the many changes occurring in it impact on human health (Jones and Roy 2007).

Another important attribute for my nursing career is commitment to independent and lifelong learning. Discipline in independence, requires an individual to be capable of making rational decisions without any kind of influence from another person. This is particularly very important in the nursing profession. This is because this is an area where one is bound to encounter very sensitive issues that require a nurse to make decisions that he or she knows that they will affect another person’s health or life and or a nurse career. In making rational decisions, I should as well be possessing relevant knowledge. Such knowledge can be acquired through commitment to lifelong learning and education. Therefore, lifelong learning will help me acquire this knowledge which will help me make rational decisions withholding discipline in community’s where patient’s conditions are unstable and unpredictable hence requiring current and up to date skills (Yoder 2003).

Conclusion

As highlighted above, as a student in a nursing field aspiring to be a nurse in future, I believe that the above attributes are very important to me for my nursing career. These attributes can be either categorized as skills or as discipline specific. Therefore, based on this, my most important skills attribute are collaboration and team working and harnessing information and communication technology skills. On the other hand, my most import ant discipline specific skills are awareness of ethics, social responsibility and cultural diversity and commitment to independent and lifelong learning. Therefore, with these attributes, I believe that I will deliver quality and safe health care to the patients in any kind of community setting.
