The Box Tree

In one of New York City’s longest restaurant strikes, Gila Baruch spent sleepless nights to keep the opulent restaurant open battling litigation, understaffing, inexperience and political interference.

Baruch managed to keep the restaurant open despite losing customers, workers and the little to no help from the hands-off owner, Agustin Paege. She followed up on licenses, appeared for hearings and stood up for the employees who had helped her during the strike.

Initially, the restaurant had scheduled two weddings that weekend and the rooms were fully booked on the night of the strike. All but three workers had decided to strike and after the Union filed the lawsuit, inspectors from different bureaus frequented the restaurant trying to find fault.

Baruch settled for a less than perfect service by the new workers but gave them the chance to learn the ropes to improve their service delivery. There was also a tuxedoed employee at the entrance tasked with shielding guests from the picketers. The restaurant held up its obligation to the weddings, private parties and regular guests reserving the restaurant.

Several of the staff hired during the strike had no prior experience working in a restaurant. Also, the striking workers who camped outside the hotel hurled insults at guests entering the premise even affording a mention in the New York Times.

Without much experience, Baruch was able to pull together a team to aid in the management of the restaurant accepting. Employees were given a chance to learn and earn; customers were informed of the picketers outside; while the agreement after the lawsuit ensured the Box Tree would continue to operate without political interference.
