What is a manager and what do they do?

The organization attains its objectives and goals via co-ordination of efforts and activities of their members. A manager is defined to an individual who is responsible for motivating and supervising workers and for directing the organization progress. A key determinant of the manager’s work is the environment nature, both external and internal, that the manager is working. The manager is responsible for ensuring that the set objectives are followed to the word while ensuring that the set success is obtained. There are various responsibilities that are linked with managers. Some of the aspects that managers undertake include setting objectives. The manager is held responsible for setting the goals for their teams and deciding what work should be done to attain those objectives. The manager also organizes the work into manageable activities and appoints people to complete those tasks. The aspect of communicating and motivating employees is another managerial responsibility so that they can accomplish the set goals. The manager is also responsible for measuring the appropriate yardsticks and targets, and appraising, analyzing, and interpreting performance. The manager is also responsible for ensuring that they nurture and develop their employees as they are the assets of the organization (Westcott, 2013). The manager has to ensure they alternate these responsibilities to attain the organization’s objectives.

Managing different personalities can be tricky!

Personality is an important subject in the life of any individual. To understand and live well with others, one must understand the personality traits of each other. Personality can be defined as the organized and dynamic set of characteristics that an individual possesses and which influences their emotions, behavioural science, environment, motivations, and cognition in various situations. Personality could also imply to the patterns of behaviours, feelings, thoughts, and social adjustments constantly displayed over time that stoutly influences one’s attitudes, self-perceptions, values, and expectations (Judge, Rodell, Klinger, Simon, and Crawford, 2013). It could also forecast human responses to other problems, people, and stress. The big five personality attributes, also defined as the five factor model, is an extensively examined hypothesis of five broad elements applied by various psychologists to illustrate the human psyche and personality. Since the model was created independently by different psychologists, there is difference between the five factors and what they are measuring based on who is referencing them. Robert McCrae and Paul Costa’s version is the most common and one referenced by many psychologists when conferring about the five factor model. The acronym OCEAN is generally used to recall McCrae’s and Costa’s five factors and they are agreeableness, openness to experience, neuroticism, extraversion, and conscientiousness (Costa Jr, and McCrae, 2013).

Motivating someone like me would mean…

Happiness is a conceptual term, an aspect that many strive to attain to keep their lives in line with their dreams. For some individuals happiness is attaining good health, while for others it could be having more wealth. Happiness is a perception that varies within different ages and individuals. Happiness implies different aspects to different people. There are various factors that lead to happiness. The most vital factor is that the individual should be optimistic and cheerful. A key aspect of attaining and reaching happiness is self realization. Friends and family all play an active role in attaining happiness. There are various aspects that make me happy as an individual (Smith, and Shields, 2013). Among these aspects includes avoiding any absenteeism from class and attending my classes early. Another aspect that heightens my happiness is submitting my assignments on time, achieving higher marks and obtaining a good grade, having a good workshop or presentation group, being active in class, meeting friends during breaks, good classmates habits and good behaviours, and kind and good teachers.

Motivation is an element that is critical in the performance of any employee. Various studies have been undertaken to indicate how motivation plays a huge role in the achievement of any organization. The Herzberg motivation hygiene hypothesis is one of the theories that indicate that there are various elements in the workplace that lead to job satisfaction, while others cause dissatisfaction. As indicated by Herzberg, the dissatisfaction and satisfaction act independently. Job satisfier pact with the elements associated in undertaking the job, while job dissatisfiers pact with the elements that denote the job context (Smith, and Shields, 2013). Among the Herzberg hygiene elements status, policy, security, and salary are among the key elements that motivates me. However, the true motivators as stated by Herzberg that motivate me include advancement, achievement, and growth as the main and core motivators in my life.

Motivating people in a workplace setup is one vital, but difficult task that many mangers fail to handle and articulate. A manager should ensure they understand the personality trait of each employee so that they can understand what motivates them. Understanding the personality trait of each employee makes them very easy to understand how to associate with each employee and how to motivate them. The five factor traits of each individual dictate their motivation elements. Based on my online personality traits test, the results indicate the various aspects that a manager can apply to motivate me. A manager who wants to motivate me can use different modes to attain their objectives. Among the key motivating aspects includes growth and advancement. A manager, who would ensure that my growth is imminent, would be a key motivating agent to my success. Since am motivated by advancement and growth, any manager who is focused on my growth and advancement would be motivating me in the most special way. Any manager, who would assign me a hard task that would help me attain achievement, would motivate my life and working condition. Achieving my set goals and objectives is a critical aspect that determines the direction my life assumes. A manager who would ensure that i achieve more would be motivating me in a more special way.

Should we worry about our happiness?

Measuring the wellbeing and happiness of each individual is a key aspect that should be considered. However, wellbeing has been constituted to mean happiness. Recently, David Cameron proposed that the happiness of a country via the use of GDP. The idea of measuring the wellbeing of individuals via the use of GDP is a brilliant idea. However, the idea does not convey the required results as the national spirit or the happiness of people cannot be measured using the Dow Jones average, and neither the national achievement can be calculated via GDP. That is an indication that the idea is great, but those given that task will die before they ever attain that dream. Various psychologists have indicated that at a particular time, the rises linked with national wealth are not matched by the mounting happiness. The various countries like Canada that have undertaken such research have found out that they have the capability to measure life satisfaction among different provinces, and have found out that rich provinces do not have the happiest folks (Benjamin, Kimball, Heffetz, and Szembrot, 2014).

There are various advantages that are linked to understanding and measuring the national wellbeing of citizens. One advantage is that it would ensure that policies implemented are studied to indicate their wellbeing to all individuals, and mainly to those that are closely associated and related. The aspect of attaining equality in the current world is an aspect that is hard to attain and it would not auger well with others in government. Consequently, trying to attain wellbeing to the nation would have some dire consequences that would affect the nation’s business and would also affect and could be a threat to the policies implemented. Some of the policies could be intimidated by the national wellbeing and would imply that the national policy decisions would be affected (Singh, 2014).
