TEACHINGREADING

Reading is paramount in any ESL/EFL classroom as it
makes
people
ready
for their careers, for
leisure of they
read
for
study
purposes. Reading
helps in providing
the
correct
models
for
grammar
and
form by offering
rich
vocabularies
and
complex
structures that are available in spontaneous
conversations. Reading
helps
introduce
interesting
topics into class, stimulate
discussion, excite
imaginative
responses
and be the
catalyst
for
fascinating
class
lessons. Reading
also
helps
connect with other
language
skills. Reading
is categorized into two types; extensive
and
intensive, extensive
reading is general
and
broad, and
students should be encouraged to do
so
independently. Intensive, on the
other
hand, is done in small
sections
or
sentences
particularly
when
students
need to understand
information
or
language. The
teaching
reading
lesson
plan
involves a five-step
plan, and
most
teachers
find
that
this five stage
approach
works
best whenever teaching
receptive
skills i.e. reading
and
listening.

A
teaching
reading
lesson
plan should have a clear
lead in, this
helps in introducing
the
top through eliciting of information, generating
reaction to photographs
or
objects
and
most importantly initiate discussion. Secondly, the
lesson
plan should have pre-teach vocabularies
and
structures that students will encounter in the
reading. This can be achieved by having
students
work in pairs on a worksheet, then
report
and
finally
compare their results. The
lesson
plan should also
indicate
how
students are expected to read
for
main
ideas, this is achieved by asking
students to read
quickly
for
purposes of answering a main
idea
question. For
example
having
students
answer
questions based on predictions
they
make after reading
the
title
and
examining
the
illustrations in the
reading
material. As a result, it’s
important to teach
the
students on some
reading
strategies like skimming
and
scanning
thus
making
it
more
successful. Step
number four should show
how
students are expected to read
for
detail, this will be achieved by having
students
read
silently
or
loudly. Both
have
advantages
having
that
silently is efficient
for
comprehension
while
reading
aloud is effective
when
pronunciation is to be factored. This
reading will be followed
by questions to determine
the level of understanding. These
questions will involve, true
or
false
questions, yes
or
no
questions, either/ or
questions, meanings of vocabularies in contexts, student to student
questioning, cloze activities
where
students are expected to fill in gaps in passages
and
lastly
have them fill multiple-choice worksheets.
Lastly
step
number five will be tailored towards activating
students’ higher level skills. Consequently, encourage
summary, synthesis, and
connection of the
reading with students’ thoughts
and
lives. This
response
helps in connecting
reading with the
other
language
skills i.e. listening, speaking, and
writing.

Conclusion

The students
will need to be involved in teaching
activities in order to help
sharpen their skills. This will be achieved by predicting; simply
having
students
go through a top
and
predict
what
the
text might be. Having
the
class
divide into groups; this will help in having
the
class
work on specific
parts of the
article
for
easy
mastery. Finally
have
each
and
every
student
come up with ideas of their own as this will give
the
teacher an insight on what
the
student has understood
and
what
he hasn’t.
