    1. Purpose of the Paper

The purpose of the article is to show different profiles that link information technology to different business objectives. To achieve this objective the authors employ a multi-method study that comprises of interviews and cases. The main profiles discussed by the authors in the article include the technical resource profile, the business enabler profile and the strategic weapon profile (Joseph, Alan & Kevin, 2007, p.676).The technical resource profile calls for IT-market engagement and low levels of IT-business integration. The business enabler profile engages information technology (IT) with suppliers and customers as well as deploying information technology in different business processes. The strategic weapon profile uses information technology and extends the enterprise which requires extensive information technology deployment both externally and internally (Joseph, Alan & Kevin, 2007, p.677).

    1. Important Points / Arguments Presented

One of the arguments presented by the authors is that organizations that use information technology in order to automate processes of administration and indirectly manage to improve their performance apply a completely different type of information technology

alignment than those firms that apply IT to directly impact the strategy of the firm by reaching into markets or deploying products that are IT-based (Joseph, Alan & Kevin, 2007, p.678). The second argument presented by the authors is that before investments in information technology is undertaken in any given organization there is need for a diagnostic framework that helps business leaders and IT managers to reach an agreement about the nature and purpose of information technology. The authors observed that this would go along way into preventing any form or types of disappointments of achieving the wrong goals or failing to realign an enterprise (Joseph, Alan & Kevin, 2007, p.679). The third point presented by the authors is that care must be taken by organizations because the business enabler and the strategic weapons alignment profiles present greater and wide challenges to firms and organizations and organizations may sometimes confuse between the two profiles thus fail to achieve their intended objectives (Joseph, Alan & Kevin, 2007, p.683).The fourth argument presented by the authors is that implementation of the three alignment profiles namely business enabler, strategic weapon and technical resource in the organization can be inhibited easily by a number of factors such as lack of support from senior executives, poor business communication with IT and failure to approve business budgets for investment in IT (Joseph, Alan & Kevin, 2007, p.688).

    1. Approach Used

The authors begin by reviewing a number of literatures that have been postulated by other authors on the same topic. This lay the foundation for idea generation. The authors hold different interviews with business and IT executives in different organizations on their use of IT in the organizations. Specifically, the interviews with business leaders and IT executives are based on the three alignment profiles namely technical resource, business enabler and strategic weapon. The business leaders and executives are required to provide useful information about how the three alignment profiles are applied in their organizations. The main organizations picked for study include multi-divisional organizations such as Commonwealth Securities Ltd with more than one business unit.

1.4. Issues and Questions I’d like to Bring Forward

One of the questions I would like to raise is “why many organizations in the contemporary competitive business environment find it difficult and challenging to apply the three profiles when the three alignment profiles can provide businesses with a competitive advantage position?” One of the issues I would like to bring forward is simplification of the three alignment profiles so that small and medium-sized firms can apply them in their organizations.
