Research Report Summary


In its quest to find out whether or not the introduction of the paid parking scheme at the University of Canberra would change the travel behavior of students coming to the university, this research applied the qualitative and quantitative methods as well as the case study and ethnography. For specificity, the survey involved 30 students; the interview had 3 participants whereas there was just one focus group. These methodologies are critically analyzed below:

Quantitative Evaluation

From the qualitative perspective, the research employed the use of a survey to collect the actual data that was required to provide a credible conclusion on the research question. Through the survey, it became easier to collect the numerical data needed, out of which statistical analyses were to be carried out. This methodology was very essential since a lot of people only tend to believe the results of a research if it is backed by numeric data; otherwise, some doubts usually accrue. The survey done was primarily aimed at using the numeric data obtained to build upon the information that was to be obtained from the qualitative methodologies and to additionally gain fresh data that attempts to draw links to the case study.

Here, convenience and judgment sample formed the foundation of the population for this particular survey. According to the Judgment Sample, the students could not be classified as experts; though they are of great significance to the research. In fact, they formed the cornerstone of this particular research. In the tail end of the research, we were able, using the survey, to perform the statistical operations which eventually was very critical in the analysis of the hypotheses stated. In order to conduct the survey, a SurveyMonkey platform was used. We came to discover that our choice for SurveyMonkey platform was not in vain; it made the interpretation of our data to be extremely easy and understandable. The platform also allowed for the most efficient method of distribution to the selected methods of the population.

In order to examine the data obtained from the survey, the Fisher Test was used together with Hypothesis Testing. These two statistical analysis methods were important in helping to come up with conclusive reports on the research purpose.

Qualitative Evaluation

With regards to the quantitative research, this research used interviews and focus groups in order to get a feel of the abstract feelings among the recipients of the paid parking scheme at the University of Canberra. The case study and ethnography also formed part of the qualitative methodologies used.

To begin with, a case study was used to answer the research question and address the hypotheses. It may have been mentioned that whenever a case study is used, there is always need to use ethnography too. In our case, ethnography ensured a comprehensive approach to the research problem. The case study was selected bearing in mind the idea that the question identified in the research problem was one of here and now. The case study that dominated the research in its entirety was that of Parking at the UC Campus: Problems and Solutions, (Barata, 2011).

We did the ethnography with the major focus being the formation of an understanding of the situations underwent by the direct recipients of the paid parking scheme at the University of Canberra. As is expected, this was done by immersing ourselves as researchers in the lives of the respondents so as to have at feel at the pinches in their shoes. This ethnography was partly complemented by the use of interviews as well as focus groups. We entered the process with an open mind (as is expected). However, this did not stop us from having a preformed fixed basic theory on what we actually thought was likely to happen.

Finally, we conducted interviews and focus groups that were tailor-made to fit the purpose of the research. The two methodologies were arrived at due to the fact that they are a direct link between the participants’ point of view and the expected outcomes by the researchers. Here, the questions that were used for interviewing were actually prepared with an aim of relaying an emotive response from the respondents. That emotive response would make sure that the data and information provided by the respondents were literally routed from deep inside their hearts with sincerity. This would consequentially ensure accuracy and reliability of the results.


In conclusion therefore, it is important to note that almost all the findings from all the methodologies discussed above turned out to be entirely contradictory to the initial hypotheses and assumptions made in the beginning. However, despite the possible discrepancies that may have arisen, the methodologies used proved efficient.
