Introduction

Research questions

  • What mode of transport do you use to get to the university, train, bus, and car?

  • How far do you live from the university: <5 km, >5 km, >10 km, and >15km?

  • Have you studies foundation studies: yes, no?

  • Do you have any worry about statistics: worry, not worry?

  • Is there an association between the mode of transport student’s use to get to university and how far they live from university?

  • Is there an association between students who have studied Foundation studies and whether a student is worried about statistics?

Research aims

  1. To investigate whether there is an association between the mode of transport students use to get to the university and how far they live from the university

  2. To investigate whether there is an association between students who have studied Foundation studies and whether a student is worried about statistics.

Research design & target population

The study will be conducted through survey design and will be concerned with proving whether there is an association between the mode of transport students use to get to the university and how far they live from the university and whether there is an association between students who have studied Foundation studies and whether a student is worried about statistics. The quantitative aspect of the research involved survey by use of structured questionnaires. It has got close ended question that are self examining and target the sample population chosen. The research targets university students and as such fifteen questionnaires will be distributed to the willing students randomly.

Data Analysis Methods

After sorting out the questionnaires, data was coded and entered, computed and analysed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) computation package. This method was efficient, fast and accurate and gave direction and magnitude to the relationship between given variables. This study used cross-tabulation to analyse its data. Cross tabulation displays the joint distribution of two or more variables. They are usually presented as contingency tables, which will show the distribution of two or more variables simultaneously. It is advantageous because it can be used with any level of measurement, nominal, ordinal, interval or ratio. It gives a greater insight than single statistics.

Results

All the 15 questionnaires were collected and the data analyzed to answer the research aims.

statistic1.1 Association between the mode of transport students use to get to the university and how far they live from the university

The above figure 1.1 shows that 57.1 % of students who live less than 5 kilometers from the university travel to the university by train. 42.9% of students living less than 10 kilometers from the university also get to the university by means of train.

80% of students living less than 10 kilometers from the campus travel by bus to the university. In addition, 20% of those living less than 15 km also use buses to get to the university.

33.3% of students living less than 5 km from the university drive to the university. Also 66.7% of students living more than 5 km but less than 10km also get to the university by means of cars. This clearly shows that students living closer to the university that is less than 5 kilometers and slightly more than 5 km use cars as their mode of transport. The students who live a little bit further from the university use buses or train to get to the university.

1.2 Association between students who have studied Foundation studies and whether a student is worried about statistics

statistic 1

From the above figure 1.2, 75% of students who had undergone foundation studies have no worry about statistics, only 25% with foundation studies worry about statistics. 71.4% of students who did not acquire foundation studies have no worry about statistics. And only 28.6 % who did not have the foundation knowledge worried. This clearly shows that foundation studies have very little impact on whether students fear or are worried about statistics.
