In a social setting, the various institutions and entities relate and interact with respect to each other’s boundaries. The environments of relation and interactions are defined; the sociological environments are even predetermined. One can think of the institution and environment as basic elements of sociology. This group of entities which share a predetermined territory, culture or morals is referred to as a society. The development of a society may be based on its primary means of continuing to exist or on its political structure. In this case, the means of existence of a society is by holding up the social prospects. Human societies are not perfect institutions and so prone to hitches. The problems that arise within the confines of a society or do require the attention of the society are social problems. A sociological environment is defined by its standards, morals and ethics that member entities are expected to adhere to. A disregard of these expectations results into social problems. Some of the social problems are discrimination, sexual abuse, family feuds, divorce, homelessness, poverty, prejudice, social inequality, suicide amongst others. This proposal seeks to comprehend Orientalism of the Arab world by the American society, why it has to be and why the victims respond the way they do. The paper combines both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies to achieve this objective.
Research Question
  • To investigate Orientalism of the Arab world by the American Society
  • To seek answers as why there is Orientalism of the Arab world by the American society and why victims respond the way they do.
The paper utilizes both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, that is, collection of responses from questionnaires from respondents.

Orient of the Arab World
According to Albert (2009), orientalising one community or section of the society by another does not happen with one person but by a group of people who have common ideas and perceptions. It also has to relate to the difference in the cultures of the two sides. The elementary theories discuss culture in its naturalistic state as related to history. The idea is to ensure perception of its reality in the exact way it is. Eagleton (2000) tries to theorise the complexity and significance in the relationship between nature and culture of a society. The American society has accustomed the Asian community in a certain way to the rest of the world. The orient in which this community has been positioned is an end result of processes which have particular interests. In a film by Media Education Foundation (1998), Edward Said give accounts and views on Orientalism of the Arab world. Said explains that the picture that has been created in the public about Arabs was of a weak people, disorganized and reckless with no fighting tactics or even the power and organized mindset necessary to win any war.
The Orientalism implants a sense of disparity to being an Arab and the representation has a misconception of what the Arab world entails. These could either be due to lack of knowledge about the Middle East region or a work process with the intention of depicting the Arabs in a certain way to the rest of the world in terms of culture (During, 2005). Construction of Orientalism is located within imperial conquests. American Orientalism is indirect and based on abstraction. This is evident by the absence of direct contact between America and the Middle East. The proposal, therefore, is that more is to be researched about the American Orientalism and to find out what exactly entails this subject. However, it is evident that it seeks to tarnish or dispute the general idea about Arabs. The subject requires an enormous amount of knowledge sufficient enough to discuss the issue, giving room for people to discuss it.
Response from the Arab World

Even with the politicized American Orientalism and reliance on indirect and abstract ways, the image that America creates about the Arab world remains. On the film, Edward says that this is because of the absence of information policies about the Arab countries as an example. They have allowed themselves to be represented in this way of Orientalism. These information policies could have tried to enlighten the world on how the Arab world really is and what it is made up of. This even makes the situation more complex since the Americans themselves have no direct contact with the Arab world yet they still rely on their limited information to create a picture of the Arabs. One would question this option by the Arab world to remain inactive and irresponsive to the subject matter (Blackstone, 2010).
