WACO-Walk Away Chill Out

University Affiliation

The idea behind WACO began in 2006 after a teenager named Matthew Stanley lost in life due to violent behavior, which occurred in a party. The community was extremely grieved by the incident. Because of that, Paul and Kay decided to create the Matthew Stanley Foundation (MSF) aimed at promoting mutual respect and non-violence among the youth (Matthew Stanley Foundation, 2014). WACO campaign is one of the two major initiatives that the Matthew Stanley foundation has created to encourage youth to develop workable relationships and shun use of violence.

Part of WACO campaign is a move to influence public policies to enable protection of young, vulnerable lives. The foundation comprises of many partners including community groups, individuals, elected representatives and businesses. Such stakeholders are imperative in implementing the organization’s strategies and spreading messages of peace and safety across the land. The campaign includes educational initiatives to assist youth to avoid abuse of alcohol and drugs. Educational initiatives are deemed fundamental in that respect because research has shown a close link between drug and alcohol abuse and aggressive behavior (St. Joseph, 2014). The campaign includes involvement of law enforcement agencies so that errand individuals may be brought to book (Baudinette, 2014).

From the research, I have learnt that historical events, such as the death of Matthew Stanley can have adverse effect on the society for many years. Sad moments are not easily forgotten and because of that, there is need to avoid risky behaviors. The story of Matthew Stanley is relevant to the post-modern society because it serves as a sad example of how aggressive behavior can cause untold suffering and loss of active human resource. From the story, young people can learn to avoid drug and alcohol abuse and aggressive behavior, particularly at parties.
