SERVICE LEARNING AND RELEVANCE TO PRIMARY HEALTHCARE

The community health service that I have located on the web is CACH (Child and Adolescent Community Health) (www.pmh.health.wa.gov.au).

The organization offers a broad array of health promotion and intervention, and early identification community based provisions to children, families and the community, centering on the development and growth of the early years, supporting wellbeing during adolescence and childhood (www.pmh.health.wa.gov.au).The provision of service is both targeted and universal. Groups that are vulnerable due to deprived health outcomes, for instance the Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal as well as the just arrived refugees remain of the major focus. Children health provisions aspire to promote better health outcomes among young children, babies as well as their families across the community of Western Australia by providing targeted and universal prevention, intervention, and early identification community health provisions. The universal component of the community child health promotion services offers social and health services and a special opportunity to enhance outcomes for families encountering hardship in taking care of their children (Lehna & Byrne, 2008).

The school health provisions strive to promote better health outcomes for young people and the school going children through targeted and universal prevention, intervention, early identification and health promotion. The Training and Education department is a multiparty funder of the initiative. It offers universal appraisals during school entry, health care access to adolescents, supporting school going children with specific health requirements, and health sponsorship to all the students are fundamental components of the program.

The benefits and objectives of service learning particularly to nursing students are many. Service learning offers meaningful and relevant service to the community(Connor-Linton, 2010). Service learning helps a nursing student to establish the practice if decisive reflection, expand their course content understanding, facilitate students to integrate with practice, improve their skills and knowledge of working collaboratively, improve their creativity abilities of solving problems, and acquire knowledge about human commonalities and difference.

Service learning also assists nursing students to develop both personally and intellectually. Sternas O’Hare, Lehman & Milligan (2009) states that besides supporting the development of students in aspects such as appreciation and stereotyping recognition of different families and diverse culture, it can also lead to the following. Most of students participating in service learning indicate that they are highly inspired to work harder and learn more while in service learning sessions as opposed to regular classes.

Students better recall materials through experience and they are able to utilize the materials which they have acquired in regular classes to the actual problems. Service learning enables student to develop a deeper comprehension of the subject matter as well as the appreciation of the complexity of social matters. Finally, the clout of service learning is entrenched in personal relationships and in performing the duties that changes the lives of people in the community.

Some of my personal learning goals for my prospective service learning practice include the following (Gerberich, 2009).

Personal Growth:

  • To boost confidence and self-esteem, improve personal responsibility and to improve personal efficacy.

Career Development:

  • To get hiring edge over other students or job seekers

  • To acquire particular job skill

  • To better understand the work environment

Social Development:

  • To improve my interpersonal competencies

  • Improve my support or tolerance for the diversity

  • To participate in some volunteer roles
