Designing for services as one way of designing for services

There are various approaches that designers use when designing professional services for their clients. Service design is a process which intends to create a value between the different actors in their socio-material setting. It is important to the practice of design as it helps designers identify aspects that should be dealt with in terms of design and service. Over the past years the practice has taken centre stage where some see it as a new field and others as originating from already existing fields.

The issue of design services is not a new one. There are many design literatures that explain its presence in the past. The different ways of approaching service design are within service literature and design literature. From various case studies, service design can be understood differently from different perspectives by learning from designers who practice it (Kimbell, 2011).

Designing to heal

Disaster has detrimental effects to the community both directly and indirectly. It leads to loss of lives and property. It takes long for the effects of disasters to subside and it may take years after the said incidence. The effects are long term physically, emotionally and physically for the victims. Designing to heal is meant to help victims of disasters get through their predicaments with the best comfort they can get. It helps them to deal with issues such as euphoria, displacement, dissolution and nostalgia. Design to heal is not only applied to people but also to places. These places should provide people with opportunities to get over tragic incidences. These are inclusive of work places, recreational areas and memorial parks (Donovan, 2013).
