Introduction

Emotional labour is the suppression or induction of feelings so as to sustain the exterior appearance that makes others to feel that they are cared for. A key aspect of being emotionally intellectual is the capability to self regulates as well as manages emotional responses, particularly in regard to the context within which they happen. Emotional labour implies mobilization of competencies such as offering support, relieving suffering, knowing patients and assists to resolve their problems (Stein- Parbury, 2013).

Aspects of emotional labour evident in case one

There are three major aspects of emotional labour namely; therapeutic collegial and instrumental emotional labour. Collegial emotional labour relates to the relations that nurses have with one another and in a multidisciplinary team.(Theodosious, 2014). Collegial emotional labour is displayed in the case scenario one in the way nurses are required to take care of mental health patients. In scenario one, when mental health patients are not able to speak themselves, the nurse unit manager must be notified and the nurse has the obligation of speaking on behalf of their patients. This is a display of collegial emotional labour because the nurse unit manager works jointly with other nurses in the unit to ensure the well being of the patients.

Instrumental emotional labour is undertaken as a direct outcome of clinical nursing intervention. The aim of instrumental emotional labour is to relax the body of the patient so that to successfully undertake a physically invasive clinical procedure. It’s concerned with the management of a patient’s emotions of fear and anxiety educed from the environment-body relationship (Stein- Parbury, 2013). Instrumental emotional labour is not applicable in scenario one because the patient is not undergoing any invasive physical clinical procedure.

Therapeutic emotional labour entails the capability of nurses to be therapeutic agents by responding to the thinking, perception and feeling of the patients. Through communication with patients, a nurse is able to listen to and understand what a patient is feeling (Stein- Parbury, 2013). In scenario one, the responsibility of the nurse unit manager and nurse to speak with patients is a display of therapeutic emotional labor. Through speaking with patients, the nurses would have been able to support their spiritual, moral and emotional development as professional nurses

How the nurse has managed his own emotions and those of the patient in the case one

The nursing profession requires that a nurse has to be in constant interaction with patients, healthcare workers and medical fraternity. The interaction between these medical practitioners and patients doesn’t not entail conversations only, but it is a intricate procedure that involves the perception of their feelings, comprehension of the emotions of the patients and usage of perceptions in management of the patients situations towards goals of efficient patient care (Jelphs & Dickinson, 2014). In case scenario one, nurses manage their emotions along with those of their patients by understanding one another through communication. It is clear that in the absence of good communication skills, it would be difficult for people to survive. A suitable approach to the nurse unit manager committee reminding nurses their obligation as professionals to take care of the patients is an excellent emotional approach that could have been used.

Emotional intelligence that could be used by the nurse to effectively address emotional labour and personal issues in case one

A positive relationship between patients, nurses and nurse unit managers can have an immense effect on the outcome of treatment. When discussing care plans or treatment options, the nurses must jointly work with nurse unit managers. Gray (2013) notes that the application of emotional intelligence in nursing requires learning how manage emotions and emotional competencies. It needs individualized and trained response, which assists mange emotions of individuals within healthcare settings.

Conclusion

Emotional labour is important within the healthcare settings as it helps medical practitioners to manage their emotions as along with emotions of the patients. Effective communication ensures that nurses and nurse managers are able to work together to meet the needs of their patients.

Emotional labour is a vital element of the nursing occupation that needs constant interactions with clients. Nurses must understand and be appreciative that they can be able to positively impact the lives of patients and know how to utilize their professional knowledge and influence to benefit patients (Gray, 2013).

Aspects of emotional labour evident in case two

Collegial emotional labour is connected to the relationship that nurses have with collegues within the healthcare settings such as doctors and social workers. Collaboration and communication between colleagues is important because it enables the concerned parties to timely have the correct information about the care and wellbeing of the patient (Gray, 2013). Collegial emotional labor is displayed in case scenario two in the way the nurse collaboratively work with the social workers to take care of Mary. Even though the nurse holds power and is in control of the patient’s situation, the nurse displays collegial emotional labour by inviting social workers to take care of the patient so as to meet the needs of the patient.

The nursing practice requires nurses to be therapeutic agents in ensuring the cure, safety and wellbeing of the patients. Therapeutic emotional labour is established through effective communication between nurses and their patients (Theodosious, 2014). In case scenario two, the nurse displays therapeutic emotional labour by communicating with the patient to inform her about her progress. When the patient regains control of her situation, she asks the nurse about her current situation and this is a clear indication that of the social, physical and psychological involvement of the nurse.

How the nurse has managed his own emotions and those of the patient in the case two

Emotional intelligence is fundamental in nursing. The capability of a healthcare staff to manage their individual emotions whilst deducing and responding to the emotions of their clients is a requirement for any individual working in healthcare profession (McQueen, 2012). In case two, the nurse has effectively managed his emotions by having a relationship with the patients and by displaying a caring attitude towards the patient. The nurse communicated with the patient so as to understand her feelings and to tell her how she is progressing. The relationship of the nurse with the patient is based on professional intimacy, respect and empathy. The nurse understands that the patient worries a lot about her kids at home shows that the nurse identifies the inherent value, uniqueness and dignity of the patient. The nurse displays communication competence by being responsive or being capable to listen to and understand the emotional needs of the patient.

Question 3

Emotional intelligence that could be used by the nurse to effectively address emotional labour and personal issues in case two

The nurse can more effectively address the emotional labour and personal and interpersonal relations with the patient by constantly communicating with the patient. Stough et al (2014) note that when patients feel that there is no adequate connection with the nurses they are not likely to trust them and also do not follow their instructions. The time a nurse spends with a patient and his family members is significant for creating relationships that are based on respect and trust. Scenario two, the nurse can effectively manage both his emotions and those Mary by spending more time in knowing and understanding her more.

Emotional labour and emotional intelligence is a vital component f the nursing profession. Nurses are required to manage their emotions and those of patients so as to successful undertake their work. Through being in constant communication and contact with patients, nurses are able to understand the needs of their patients.
