SCAFFOLDING IN RELATION TO LOW RISE DEMOLITION

Scaffolding refer to a temporary structure erected to support labourers, construction materials and even tools and equipments during a construction, repair or demolition exercise for building or any other large structure. The structure is usually a fabrication of metal work, mostly pipes and metal sheet; metal used can vary between aluminum and steel. However a variety of other materials are also used to assemble scaffolding. Bamboo is very popular in South East Asia. Young Eucalyptus trees are also widely used in Africa. The art of scaffolding assembly backs date to 5 BC among the ancient Chinese, Greek and the Egyptians. This essay gives a general description of the of the procedures followed while putting up a scaffolding for low rise building and in particular single storey building f or the purpose of demolition of the building. The first step during assembly of scaffolding is the selection of material to use, whether to use steel, aluminum or wood depends on various factors. Among the factors that are considered is the kind of work and load to be supported by the scaffolding. In construction where building materials are supported a stronger assembly is required and metal would be the preferred material. For a demolition exercise the scaffolding is designed to support the workers and the tools that will be used for the demolition exercise. Most of the tools used when the exercise is not fully mechanized are usually simple tools that are hardly 0.1 tones and thus the load supported is not as much. This is qualifies both wood and metal scaffoldings. However, since it’s a demolition exercise, the scaffolding require to be stand alone or independent to the one storey house, this factor disqualifies wood, though if there are no alternatives it can be used.

Steel or aluminum can be used for the exercise. The second step involves determining the height of rise of the scaffolding. The height is important in determining the area of the base. The height of a single storey residential house is approximately 8 meters. The base of scaffolding is usually one third of the height; therefore the base will be approximately 3 meters in area. Erection of the scaffolding should start by collecting all the materials required, all the ties, safety net, platforms, pipes, and tools to be used.

The next stage involves starting the actual assembly work of the scaffolding. The base must very stable to avoid cases of failure of the scaffolding when under pressure of the load. Metal pipes are erected by screwing the on bases to support them on the ground. The pipes are bolted together using tie bolts and through ties. The through ties will be fixed to the walls at the ground floor. Ox ties should also be utilized to fix the scaffold to the pillars for better stability. Anchor ties should be drilled through the walls of the building.

After erection of the pipes at the base, pipes of 40mm and above in diameter are preferred. To the pipes, the first platform should be screwed to the pipes. The platform should be located at about 1 meter from the ground or about three and half feet, subsequent platforms should also be bolted at 1 meter from the previous platform. The pipes can be joined to whatever height desired of the structure. Proper bolting of the pipes should be conducted to ensure there is no weak link in the structure. Once the plan is executed properly there is stability of the structure is assured.
