  1. Introduction

The purpose of this project was do determine and understand the nature of materials and equipment that are used in sensor temperature measurement using RTD. Secondly, the experimental project aimed at investigating and understanding the various methods employed in temperature measurements using sensors. The third purpose that was associated with the performance of this project was the description and understanding of the features of the different devices that used in sensing and measurement of temperature. Temperature is a very commonly measured parameter in several engineering disciplines. This is because of engineering processes monitored based on temperature changes (Bewoor and Kulkarni, 2009).

2.Abstracting the Problem

The performance of this project that involved the description and study of RTD sensors in temperature measurement in comparison to other temperatures was a way of addressing a problem associated with efficiency in temperature measurement. There was the need to identify and understand an equipment sensor with the capability to measure a wide range of temperatures. This is because of the industrial processes which require long term stability, good interchange ability as well as enhanced accuracy have their temperature taking place in the range of about (-200 °C to 850°C). In such a case, the adoption and use of RTD sensors as compared to thermocouples come in handy.

3.Division of Tasks

There were several tasks involved in carrying out the task this particular experimental project. The division and distribution of the tasks involved in the project was done accordingly amongst the members who took part in the performing the experimental project. The division of tasks was introduced with the aim of facilitation the project activities and operation so that the time duration was significantly reduced. Furthermore, the idea of division of tasks was meant to ensure that the participating members were in a position to grasp and clearly understand the practical aspect of the experimental project.

4.Problems Faced

The performance of this experimental project was successful apart from several problems that were experienced. These were ranging from those problems associated with mistakes in procedural usage of the devices to break down of the sensor devices in extreme temperatures conditions. In such cases, some of the sensors devices were rendered ineffective and carry out further measurements as far as accurate measurement of temperatures were concerned. Other problems faced were those that resulted from errors committed at the time of installation of the sensors and other equipment. This further translated into problems of accuracy in temperature measurements.

5.Identification of the Sensor Type

The identification of the types of sensor that were used as the RTD temperature sensing device involved a proper prior understanding of the features and the operating principle of the temperature sensing element. The RTD consists of a sensing element in the firm of an electrical resistor that is capable of changing its resistance with the change in temperature. The element that is used in sensing function as part of the temperature-measuring device is made up of an extension wire, a coil of wire and a grid of conductive film(Bewoor and Kulkarni, 2009).

The use of various types of sensors in the measurement of temperature is significant in several applications. The applications require different sensors depending on the temperature ranges as well as operating conditions. Sensors for temperature measurement are available in terms of different physical features and construction technology used in them. In industrial and commercial applications, the identification of sensor type is selected to suit temperature measurement that involves a wide separation between the point at which the sensor is place and the control or indication point. Thermistors, RTD’s as well as thermocouples were identified as some of the most appropriate in detecting temperature signals in remote locations (Meijer, 2008).

6.Performance Test of the Sensor

The performance test of the sensor was carried out in order optimize it performance with regard to the temperature range that it is capable of detecting and to enhance its accuracy. The other significance that is associated with the performance test that was carried out on sensors was the enhancement of its capabilities in accommodating unique features of the element that is used in temperature sensing (Meijer, 2008). The performance test involved the actual use of the sensor in the measuring of the temperatures in the expected operating surroundings to evaluate it is with regard to the expected performance requirements.

  1. Measurement System Implementation

7.Hardware Configuration

The implementation of the measuring system that was applied in the measuring of temperature using RTD and thermocouples in this particular experimental project considered both hardware and software configurations. The hardware configuration measuring system comprised the inclusion of the sensing element, the connecting wires that acted to provide a link between the sensing element and the display of point of control. In addition, a physical support is responsible for the positioning of the testing instrument and all its associated apparatus in place during the process of temperature measurement. The hardware configuration also involved the identification and incorporation of some of the materials applicable for the RTD temperature measurement. These ones included platinum with a temperature usable range of (-450°F To 1200°F), nickel with a temperature usable range of (-150°F To 600°F) as well as copper with a temperature usable range of (-100°F To 300°F). The element used in sensing for the RTD was configured to contain a ceramic case, a platinum film, a glass to offer support and also to the wire element and a typical sensing element. The wires connecting the sensing element to the control or readout point were configured using materials such as nickel-plated copper, nickel alloy as well as silver plated copper (Bewoor and Kulkarni, 2009).

8.Software Configuration

Software configuration for the measuring system implementation involved the application of LabVIEW. This configuration comprised of two different parts. The first one consisted of a panel situated together with control equipment. This first part was utilised through the performance of controls and manipulation of the other components of the measuring system. The second part is one that was configured through the use of a block diagram which played a role in coordinating all the other functions of the temperature measuring system (Bewoor and Kulkarni, 2009).

  1. Conclusion

In conclusion, it was established following the performance of this experimental project, that different types of sensors are appropriate and applicable for use in different types of applications. However, this depends largely on the nature of the operating conditions as well as the physical feature of sensors among other factors. There has also been identification and a clear understanding with regard to the sensor selection, performance testing as well as problems that are involved in the adoption of sensors in temperature detecting and measurement in various applications.
