Title: I Reflective Journal

Reflective Journal

In the events leading to my reflection I had read about Henry Fayol’s Principle of Management that included division of labour, authority and responsibility, disciple, unity of command, unity of direction and subordination of individual interests to general interests. I also read about Fair Remuneration to employees, Centralization and Decentralisation, Scalar chain, order, equity, stability of use of personnel, initiative, and spirit of Co-operation (Sprit de crops). As I sat down relaxing in my room I drifted into a trail of thoughts that revolved around the problems facing management of non-governmental organizations. I even thought about starting my own company later on in life or a non-government to cater for the disadvantaged in the society. Many non-governmental organizations particularly in developing countries face imminent collapse due to poor planning and lack of clear management structures. There is hardly any deliberate effort to ensure that there is no conflict of interest and it is also a daunting task to separate the pioneer of an organization and the organization itself.

Lack of this separation of the organization from the founder leads to collapse of organization upon the death of the founders, or adverse management and eventual demise. Reflecting on Henry Fayol’s Principle of management made me to understand that having elaborate structure of the organization and distinct separation of power is crucial to starting on a positive note when forming an organization. Decentralisation and centralisation are important practices that should be incorporated in as long as it is known where they will be applied. The scalar chain will spell out who hold which office and what is the obligation of that office. Equity and fair remuneration to employees bring order, stability and spirit of co-operation in the organization. On the bottom line of my reflection I learned that it is very essential to study the principle of management keenly and apply them where applicable. An organization life should be perpetual and not tagged or dependant on the life of people who found it.
