Reflection on key general and profession specific attributes I need to develop as a health practitioner
Patients and their healthcare problems always leave a lasting impact on the health practitioner just like my encounter with an aging, terminally ill patient. When the patient walked past our doors, few would have contended that she was well off. However, within a few days at the facility her demanding nature and ‘arrogance’ had put off almost everyone who chanced to interact with her. One day a nurse lost her cool and told her off where it took the intervention of a senior nurse to arrest the rather fluid situation. Apparently, she was the only nurse who didn’t loose her cool. All of us could see why: she was the most courteous and tactful person ever. She always showed a genuine interest in everybody and had that motherly love that made her standout.
Feelings, Evaluation and Analysis
Courtesy and love born out of genuine interest in the welfare of others are the stuff that great health practitioners are made off. In this department, most of us were found lacking. If I were to interact with the lady again, would I let my prejudice and pre-formed opinions cloud my vision and duties as a health practitioner? No! If only I showed a genuine interest and understanding, I would have understood rather than judged her.
Conclusion and the action plan
Courtesy, tact and understanding are indeed valuable attributes that all health practitioners must inculcate in them. I therefore plan to acquire these through training and enlisting the nurse as a mentor.
