Recommendation for Obesity Prevention

Over the past decades, there have been prevalence and increased levels of obesity and overweight (Wadden & Stunkard, 2004). Globally, approximately 170 million children are considered to suffer from obesity (Dubé, 2010). To prevent obesity, WHO developed Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity, and Health (DPAS) in a bid to assist individual member states deal with the prevalence level (Lawrence, 2010). WHO also developed the framework to assist respective member states to monitor and evaluate the implementation of the strategy (WHO, 2012). Based on the strategy, the national governments need to demonstrate high levels of leadership and ensure facilitation of collaborative action to implement programs and policies that support environment for health (Obesity Reduction Strategy Task Force, British Columbia, & Provincial Health Services Authority, 2012). Such actions would in turn facilitate a positive change in the diet and physical activity behaviours associated with various outcomes: health, environment, social, and economic (Morris, 2015). There is also need for equity and inclusivity in the prevention mechanisms. Various studies indicate that children from higher socioeconomic background tend to benefit from obesity initiatives than those from more disadvantage backgrounds (Manoria, 2010). Effective prevention strategy requires engagement of multiple sectors and settings in a bid to create a healthier environment (Fassini, 2017). To reduce obesity, people need to reduce food consumption away from home especially the fast foods with high fat contents and junk foods which in most cases is hard to resist. Snacking is also an issue among children as it is associated with adiposity. Obesity prevention is also achieved through consumption of fewer calories and through non-prescription orlistat which prevents the adsorption of fats in the intestine (American Heart Association, 2015). To prevent obesity, people need to reduce time spent while sitting, improve sleep, and reduce the level of stress.
