Rebuttal

Introduction

Emotional intelligence, according to Goleman, (2000) is the awareness and ability to control emotions of others. Traits of individuals with strong social intelligence include good oral communication skills, self-confidence, sociability, stress tolerance, and an understanding of the social dynamics of organizational problem solving. There is growing recognition that multiple intelligences are required for global leadership. Intelligence is a multidimensional, and there are several types of intelligences needed for effective leadership.

Conclusion

It is factual that understanding of emotional intelligence by leader will promote high organizational performance. However, this fact is very general and does not convey a specific argument that can be rebutted by a specific rebuttal. Although some firms are endeavouring to enhance the emotional intelligence ability of their leaders, very few try to grow cultural intelligence, as awareness of this important concept is still at an early stage or it means they are not mature.

Argument

Introduction

Emotional intelligence plays a major role in predicting leadership effectiveness. IQ and the five personality traits, namely, neuroticism, extraversion, openness to experience, agreeableness and conscientiousness have always been the major predictors of leadership performance. Cognitive intelligence can be considered as the basic ability if a leader wants to encourage careful-problem solving and creativity in his subordinates in a proper way. Social intelligence comprises of good oral communication skills, self-acceptance, sociability, capacity for status, stress tolerance, and an understanding of the social dynamics of organizational problem solving.

Conclusion

Emotional intelligence has been proven to be dependent upon cognitive intelligence and personality. However, lack of robust support from empirical research or evidence to demonstrate that emotional intelligence explains the majority of the variance in leader effectiveness is inexistent, and there are three main personality factors related to emotional intelligence provide little evidence on emotional intelligence being essential for leadership. Self-monitoring, agreeableness, and need for affiliation are commonly referred factors of emotional intelligence.
