Background of Research

The engineering and technological-based professions have continued to evolve over the few past years. In essence, engineers are no longer expected to confine their respective capacities and skills in fulfilling particular tasks of a support nature solely (Evans &Lindsay, 2002). Their involvement in organisations has become more encompassing given that they are now allowed to assume far-much wider organisational goals and objectives. Presently, they are engaged in managing of technological systems, resources as well as projects and thus, play a critical role in adding value to an underlying organisational performance mechanism. It is important to note that evolution of the fundamental role of engineers was initiated by the developments and alterations that took effect in the course of the manufacturing industry period (Ghoshal & Bartlett, 1994). The manufacturing industry has experienced tremendous growth from the mere era that depended heavily on demand and people intensive processes to generate large volume and low varieties of products (Ghoshal & Bartlett, 1994). The immediate introduction of automated systems in the early 1970s in relation to CNC machines as well as automated materials handling systems fostered to the reliance of on far-much highly skilled labour and a disciplined approach towards new product development use advanced technological features. The period was earmarked with extensive processes related to the introduction of technological innovations for both manufacturing operations as well as new product developments.

Current State-of-Art

The current competitive nature of organisations has continued to exert a great deal of pressure on the importance of adopting integrated roles and the capacity to manage distinct projects on a cross-functional platform (Zairi, 1991). The result of this development is focused on connecting organisational internal level of strengths to the external competitive markets. As far as engineering and technologically-based organisations are concerned, their immediate responsibilities have been widened to encompass aspect attributed directly to organisational competitiveness. The introduction of macro-engineering is considered to be a fundamental manner in which provision of knowledge and training is availed for purposes of comprehending the ways for which enormous systems conduct their operations that could extend to people; processes; machine processes as well as market behaviours and other notable external factors (Schreiber, 2000). In this regards, it is quite clear that the future competitiveness of organisations will likely emphasise on overall project teams as well as matrix structures to foster the growth and transformation of engineers into management jobs (Zairi, 1991). Despite there being numerous studies on how organisations adopt engineering practices, there lacks sufficient scope on how these engineers could be progressed into managers and as a result, adopt and acquire the different set of quality management techniques (Powell, 1995).

Research Methodology

For this study, the research methodology will focus on theoretical analysis of different sets of material resources. The paper will seek to find useful information on the topic and build reliable arguments from them altogether.

  1. To find out the degree of quality management techniques in engineering and technology-based organisations

  2. To determine the different nature of quality management techniques viable for these organisations.
