Introduction

Over the last few decades, there has been significant development in the Singapore tourism industry. This boost has seen tourism in Singapore prove to be a better source for revenue generation in the country. Tourism in Singapore is governed by the Singapore Tourism Board, which has many situated in different parts of the world. This move is aimed at promoting Singapore tourism to the world. The Singapore tourism board incorporates various methods of advertisements, which have been beneficial in marketing Singapore as an attractive tourism destination. Established in 19964, its main function is the coordination of touristic avenues such as hotels, travel agents and the airline industry as preferred tourism promoters. In addition to this, the Singapore tourism board has managed to encourage foreign and local investors come up with projects aimed at cleaning Singapore (“Tourism in Singapore, 2006”).

Tourism Strengths in Singapore

To start, Singapore has a highly standardized infrastructure. The transport network, excellent airport facilities and state-of-the-art communication technology has perpetuated the growth of Singapore as a tourist destination. Singapore is situated at the heart of South east of Asia. Therefore, timely flight connections to over 180 destinations worldwide make Singapore’s geographical location desirable. In spite of this, there has been an introduction of low-cost paying airlines which has made travel simple, thus, attracting a great number of tourists visiting Singapore. There has also been a surge for planning of international corporate meetings and conventions in Singapore. This is due to the excellent meeting facilities available, which has seen Singapore scooping an award as the world’s second top convention city et cetera.

In terms of education, Singapore has been considered as one of Asia’s top English speaking tourist destinations. Though English is a second language in Singapore, it has included the English subject in the curriculum and also invited Western Universities to help Singaporeans who wish to achieve Post graduate degrees or short professional courses. Singapore has also kept it simple and clear; the provision of tourist information which is easy to use and interpret is also a booster to the tourism industry. The presence of cultural diversity is also a source of attraction. Many tourists visiting Singapore experience different cultural practices in a single destination.

Singapore boasts of strong industrial partnerships which have also been a key booster in the growth of tourism. Finally, Singapore is privileged to be one of the cleanest and tidiest cities around the globe. This has been appealing for business travelers as well as international tourists.

Tourism weaknesses in Singapore

Despite the significant growth witnessed in Singapore, there are challenges, which pose a threat to tourism. These include the minimal tourist attraction sites in Singapore. In addition to this, the number of historical and cultural sites is limited. This hampers the growth of tourism. A regulated tourist destination also weakens tourism in Singapore. A large majority of tourists visiting the country develop an uncomfortable feeling while on holiday as the country is highly regarded as clean and tidy. Tourists are unable to cope with such rules hence disregard Singapore as a preferred tourist destination. Singapore’s costs of living are also a major concern in regard to tourism matters. Due to the fact that it is a cosmopolitan city, living in Singapore subjects one to exorbitant spending. This refers to the high prices of hotels, transportation and food, which discourages most tourists from considering touring Singapore for long holidays. The country is small and this leads to limited tourist attractions. Costs of labor are also very high leading to a small percentage of staff workers in the tourism and hospitality industry.

The major stakeholders in the Singapore Tourism industry comprises of the tourism companies, tourists and the local community.

Therefore, Singapore has had the need to develop safer and logical marketing strategies and also the involvement of vision. To achieve its desired goals, Singapore has adopted its own strategy aimed at developing new ideas in order to take advantage of the rapidly-growing phenomenon. Through boldness and innovation, more important aspects pertaining to tourism growth hope to be achieved in the twenty first century. This involves unique ability and strength in the given field.

Tourism Unlimited

Tourism unlimited in Singapore is aimed at the creation of space in the continuous growth, expansion and contributions towards Singapore’s national economy. This is meant to illustrate the importance of touring Singapore hence advertising it as a must see location. This attracts many people around the world who would wish to explore Singapore. Tourism Unlimited is all about Singapore and its partners progressing ahead together as a whole. This brings out the spirit of cooperation and improves bonds between countries, instead of competing against each other at one another’s expense (“Tourism in Singapore, 2006”).

Uniquely Singapore

This is a theme launched by the Singapore tourism board to deliver information around the world with an aim of giving information concerning Singapore. The main objective of the theme is to present unique features and locations to visitors each time they visit making every touring process is unique and special in its own ways. These process places Singapore in a good position in regard to all that entails to tourism.

Conclusion

Having reviewed the potential Singapore has in the tourism industry, it is with no doubt that the growth observed in the past decades will surge. The strengths in Singapore tourism industry is quite an improvement due to the strategic methods the implemented by the Singapore tourism board. Though Singapore, is a significant tourism destination in the twenty first century, Singapore tourism board should communicate effectively with the key stakeholders come up with affordable services, thus reposition itself through changing specific needs and demands of tourists.
