Project Management

Introduction

The term project refers to the work that is temporarily undertaken which results in the creation of unique products and services. On the other hand, project management is defined as a process which includes some activities which include, commencing, planning, and implementation, checking and controlling and lastly ending the process (Lewis, 2007). The process of project management defers from the traditional management as it involves supervision of projects which are complex, temporarily and non-repetitive. Changes in technology and changes in the systems due to change in the cultural systems demand a change in the leadership, learning, and technical skills.

Explanation of Project Management

Project management involves some processes which start from the initiation stage and end at the closing process. According to Martin & Tate (2001), the initiation step in THE project management process is the first stage where the project is originated by someone. The second phase is that of planning where goals are set and budgeting is done. Another critical stage of project administration is that of implementation which is the doing phase. The execution phase involves actualizing or just performing the activities that require being done to complete the project.

Project network stage is the phase which defines all the activities of the project. Additionally, the network stage assists in ensuring proper time allocation are done on each activity. It directly helps the project managers in project scheduling. Techniques which are used in project scheduling include Gantt chart technique, the method of using critical path, project evaluation and review, Microsoft project and finally that of project network technique. The network stage helps in identification of the critical path which is used to determine the shortest time that can be used to complete a project.

Constant Connectivity

There are changes in technology that are affecting the project management process. Constant connectivity is one of the changes in technology that is affecting the communication process of project management. In relation to this, some activities have evolved thus making the communication process within the team managing the project management to be constant. About this, mobile applications, social media, and evolution happening in cloud computing have emerged to change the interaction between the team members. Accordingly, the tools have ensured that work is spread throughout the day, thus making it easy to answer questions anywhere and anytime.

Emergence of Channels

Some channels to reach various stakeholders have also evolved. However, different tools can be used to reach various participants, thereby making it difficult to arrive at some of the other stakeholders. The world is changing in a rapid way which makes it difficult for the teams in project management to interact (Berkun & Berkun, 2007). Social networking, mobility, and collaboration are some of the changes in technology that are happening to assist the teams to respond to the dynamic world. Social networks help the teams to build strong social ties. Mobility, on the other hand, assists in the team to work together from any place. Therefore, the emerging channels are helping the stakeholders to collaborate and accomplish tasks from any point.

Cultural Changes

Cultural change is another development happening in the project management field which is affecting the skills of the managers. From the definition of project management, the process involves temporary works which are unique in each project undertaken. It, therefore, means that the there are changes in the systems that require being taken in each project undertaken. As a result, the project managers have to ensure that the teams are trained and to adapt to the changes in the systems utilized in different projects. Accordingly, cultural barriers must be considered when implementing the new systems.

Change in skills

Constant connectivity which is occurring as a result of changes in technology requires managers to improve their technical skills of knowing how to lead the teams. All that is needed is practicing to improve their experience. To achieve this, the only tactic that can be used is starting to learn the basics of the emerging technology. Learning the basics and practicing the emerging technology will help in improving the technical skills of the managers in leading the teams.

Ability to learn the new channels that are emerging as a result of new technology more quickly is a skill that is evolving as a result of the emergence of channels to communicate to the various stakeholders. The project managers have to keep pace with the changing technology which is as a result of the evolvement of the new software (Nicholas & Steyn, 2008). As a result, the managers need to develop quicker learning skills which will help them in accomplishing these tasks. Also, the leadership skills of managers need to evolve to ensure that they can lead people on how to adapt to the changing systems as a result of a change in the culture. Therefore, learning skills and leadership skills will be affected.

Conclusion

In brief, project management involves temporary work that is undertaken. Since the activity involves unique ways of carrying out the project, changes in technology and other developments result in a change in skills. About this, technology results in the constant connection, the emergence of new channels while culture results in the change in the systems to carry out activities. As a result, a change in technical skills, leadership skills, and learning skills is experienced.
