EMPIRICAL FINDINGS ON RESEARCH ABOUT RE-OFFENDING CONDUCTED ON
JUVENILE JUSTICE WORKERS
The purpose of the research was to establish the reasons why young offenders on community-based supervision as a method of rehabilitation, usually end up engaging in more offences. The methodology used to conduct this research was interviewing the juvenile justice workers. This method resulted in a series of challenges, which the researcher found out, that delayed the completion of the research. Again, the assumption that a research question is easy turns out to be a disastrous mistake that costs the researcher dearly especially in terms of time. The assumption causes the researcher to fail to prepare adequately for the research.
The next challenge was the method of research, which constituted of face-to-face interviews. Most of the workers preferred electronic and telephone interviews, probably because of the anonymity aspect. The researcher concedes that any other form of interview would not have been effective. However, this methodology presented some difficulties for the researcher. The interviewees were not willing to cooperate fully with the researcher. In an interview, some participants would not be willing to answer questions at all. Others would be hesitant in answering some questions. Some were even honest enough that they would give false or misleading information. The workers insisted that they felt that the answers they gave would somehow impact negatively on their jobs, and for this reason they felt uncomfortable in answering the questions. In fact, the fear of the interview was so real that some workers felt that it would lead to loss of their jobs. The workers may also feel that the interview targets them. This is probably because answers granted from such an interview may form evaluation criteria of the workers performance and thus question their effectiveness.
To engage in an effective interview, the researcher needs to reassure the workers by using a signed consent form that clearly informs the interviewees that the purpose of the interview was purely academic and not for any other purpose such as work-related evaluation. A researcher needs to provide documentary evidence to interviewees clearly stipulating the roles of both the researcher and the participants. The other important reassurance was the protection of the workers identity, their answers given in pure anonymity.
