The purpose of the report is to provide an organisational analysis of Wolf Blass Wines Limited and a description of the industry in which it operates. The report also seeks to determine the professional qualifications and experience needed to work as a logistics manager at the firm. The finding is that the organisation is an award-winning business that serves a global clientele. An additional finding is that the wine industry will continue to benefit from increased demand. When it comes to professional qualifications, the report recommends the acquisition of a Certified Professional Logistician award. This will be acquired through continuous professional development that combines formal education, on the job training, informal training, participation in seminars, and publication of papers. The report also finds that it is essential to obtain certification from the Wine & Spirits Education Trust as it will provide the knowledge needed to handle different types of wine. The report also recommends working for a small logistics firm for at least two years to develop supply chain knowledge and communication skills.

1.0 Introduction

1.1 Purpose of Report

The purpose of the report is to undertake an organisational analysis of Wolf Blass Wines Ltd. and to describe the professional standards relevant to the position of Logistics Manager at the company. The report also recommends the qualifications and experience that I need to acquire to attain the position of logistics manager at Wolf Blass.

1.2 Background Information

Professional development is a process through which an individual masters a complex set of knowledge through experience and formal education to become proficient in a specific disciple. Walker et al. (2009) note that professional development takes time with expertise acquired after more than five years and with broad experience. As such, it is essential for students and graduates to have a well-defined plan for their careers. This report discusses the professional standards, qualifications, and experience required to work as a logistics manager at Wolf Blass.

2.0 Discussion/Analysis

2.1 Findings

2.1.1 Organisation

Wolf Blass Wines Ltd, located in Nuriootpa South Australia, is the producer of renowned wines that have won local and international awards for excellence. The company was founded in 1966, and it grows and sources the finest grapes in South Australia to create new and contemporary wines (Wolf Blass Wines Ltd 2016). The company operates in Australia’s Wine Industry whose output makes Australia one of the top ten wine producing nations in the world (Australian Government 2016). Australia’s large size and variations in climate and soil types are some of the factors behind the success of the industry as they allow for the production of all major types of wine. According to Treasury Wine Estates (2015, p. 8), global consumption of wine is increasing, with the growth being strongest for premium brands. In addition to the wine industry, Wolf Blass operates in the agricultural industry through its growing and sourcing of grapes.

The organisation is a subsidiary of Treasury Wine Estates, one of the world’s foremost wine companies that is listed on the Australian Securities Exchange. The parent company’s expertise in grape growing and sourcing, winemaking, and marketing allows Wolf Blass Wines to access a global market that covers 70 countries in the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Australia and New Zealand (Treasury Wine Estates 2016, p. 6). Wolf Blass’ stakeholders include the parent company, employees, third-party partners, product champions, and consumers drawn from around the world. Wolf Blass, through its parent company Treasury Wine Estates, is committed to being a positive force in the community in which it operates. The parent company’s strategic priorities cover sustainable sourcing to protect the environment, promotion of responsible consumption of wine, and volunteering and community engagement (Treasury Wine Estates 2016, p. 26).

2.1.2 Purpose

The company’s purpose is to rely on the dedicated craftsmanship and passion of its winemakers to come up with wines that have quality, character, and consistency. The success of the firm can be seen from the firm being the only winemaker in history to have won the Jimmy Watson Trophy four times (Wolf Blass 2016).

2.1.3 Vision and Mission

Wolf Blass’ mission is to produce award-winning wines using old-age methods that are enhanced by a world-class winery (Wolf Blass 2016). The firm operates under Treasury Wine Estates whose vision is to become the world’s most celebrated company in the wine industry. Additionally, the firm has the vision to enrich the lives of its customers through its quality wines (Treasury Wine Estate 2015, p. 4).

2.2 Professional Standards

The Certified Professional Logistician (CPL) award is the professional standard that applies to logisticians in Australia. The main advantage of the award is that it measures professionalism and capability in the global logistics and supply chain management profession (SCLAA 2016). The certification is obtained by continuous professional development where an individual obtains 120 points over a three-year period. The points come from formal study, on the job learning, informal private study, attending seminars/conferences/meetings, and making presentations (SCLAA 2016). In addition to these activities, certified logisticians have to follow a CPL code of conduct.

2.3 Professional Interest

In addition to the CPL, I will need the Wine & Spirit Education Trust Level 1Certificate to get a hands-on introduction to topics like the main types of wine and how to store wine (WSET 2016). I will also need to develop managerial skills with communication skills being the major priority. This is because logisticians have to interact with both internal and external parties that play a critical role in the functioning of an organisation. Given that Wolf Blass is a subsidiary, communication skills will also be important in helping to ensure that the company contributes to the vision of Treasury Wine Estates. The completion of my studies, obtaining a CPL award, and getting work experience will give me the knowledge, analysis skills, judgement, and social responsibility required to work in management.

3.0 Conclusion

In conclusion, Wolf Blass operates in Australia’s thriving wine industry. The firm concentrates in the high end of the market with its brands winning international accolades across its history. The organisational analysis shows that the firm provides an attractive platform for the development of my career. The report finds that I will need to obtain the Certified Professional Logistician (CPL) award through continuous professional development to work as a logistics manager at Wolf Blass. In addition to this professional standard, it will be critical to develop communication skills to be a successful logistics manager. The Wine & Spirit Trust Certificate Level 1 Certificate will also be needed to get a better understanding of wines.

4.0 Recommendations

4.1 Industry

The report finds that the wine industry is in a strong position and that it will continue to grow owing to increased demand for wine. The acquisition of the Wine & Spirits Education Trust certification by the end of the year is recommended to guarantee an understanding of the wine industry.

4.2 Professional Standards

Application for the Certified Professional Logistician award is recommended. The CPL award has the added advantage of ensuring that one undertakes continuous professional development.

4.3 Development

A key part of the CPL is continuous professional development. This will be acquired through working in a small logistics firm for three years to acquire supply chain knowledge and to develop my communication skills.
