Professional biography Essay Example
The aim of this professional biography is to demonstrate essential parts of my professional life. It will be demonstrated by defining my accomplishments, the contributing variables, the limitations and other factors influencing the success or failure of my experiences in the nursing profession. The biography will also present my academic qualifications and practical experiences indifferent fields of nursing. Saudi Arabia lacks definite nursing professional guidelines and standards, and in order to complete the biography I will draw on the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). UK Nursing and Midwifery Council (2010) presents four domains which are Professional values, nursing practice and decision-making, interpersonal skills and communication and leadership, management and teamwork. In professional values, I adhere to the code of ethics and other nursing values in accomplishing assigned or needs of the patients. Effective decision making process is crucial and continuously guides me in arriving at appropriate decisions. Effective decisions requires effective communication which are important in leadership and interpersonal relationships. I advocate for people to embrace effective communication, use it appropriate and use it to mitigate problems such as conflicts and misunderstandings, which can occur. Balancing these different domains, I am able to create an effective team work and employ different management styles depending on the situation and context. I will use different tools such as SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) to qualify my experiences and academic qualifications. SWOT analysis is an analysis of an individual’s internal strengths and weaknesses, its opportunities for growth and development, and the threats that the external environment presents to its survival (Health Administration Press, 2010).
Why I Chose Nursing:
I could not forget something that happened to me when I was high school; I once visited a health care facility but the service was poor because of lack of knowledge and expertise. I felt pity for the sick people and the others requiring nursing assistance, feelings associated with care and compassion. I felt that I should be responsible for assisting and caring for the disabled or others that faced different nursing-related challenges and I wished to be one of the nursing team. My passion for values and quality, and embracing the diversity of the world, continue to inspire me to adopt nursing fundamentals and to support patients’ and community needs. I am committed to advancing a high quality of care. I talked with my family about this story to understand their perception towards nursing because nursing profession is seen more to belong to female rather than male.
My parents were supportive when I talked to them about nursing but my brothers were not supportive. The argument from my brothers included nursing is a female based professional and the responsibilities associated with nursing. My parents wanted the best for me and allowed me to make personal decisions in my life. The Center on Education Policy (2012) acknowledges numerous research such as Health Administration Press (2010) and Clutter (2010), which indicates the influence that parents have on motivating their children’s success in school. Parents may lack qualifications or information regarding a subject matter, but they encourage the students’ feelings of control and competence and foster positive attitudes towards educational excellence. I can remember the expectations and beliefs of the parents contribute to the student’s engagement and they influence their children’s desire to learn. Clutter (2010) supports similar views by tracing the history of past career counseling techniques, and the importance of parents in the formative years of the child. Clutter (2010) concludes that parents play an important role in encouraging, engaging, and motivating career choices and educational development. Moreover, Jungen (2008) states that parents influence their children’s career choice in numerous ways, including family values, work ethics and gender stereotyping. Parents in Saudi Arabia have responsibilities of guiding and providing support to the children, which is intertwined with numerous processes and components such as religion, culture and societal expectations. Depending on age, I know that at lower ages, children follow the directives of the parents but as the children grow, rebellion is unavoidable. My parents influenced my decision to pursue nursing and acquire the necessary qualifications, because they knew about my passion for nursing and supported and encouraged me in this choice. As a result, I became extremely confident and proud of my decision. Saudi Arabia government is facing numerous challenges when it comes to nursing requirements and understanding these problems informed me to pursue a nursing career.
Al-Mutairi (2014) highlights the numerous problems that the Saudi Arabia government faces in the provision of healthcare. Some of the challenges include a high demand for services, changing patterns of disease, and a shortage of health professionals. Lamadah and Sayed (2014) present statistics stating there are only 40 nurses for every 10,000 in the Saudi Arabian population. Some of the challenges associated with a shortage of nurses include sociocultural factors, cultural and communal values, community image, mixing of different genders, family disagreements and long working hours (Hellerawa and Adambarage, 2015). I understand these different challenges, and decided to pursue nursing education and career to provide quality care and to improve overall health care in order to help and support the Saudi population and country.
Financial security and job security are some of the factors that influenced me to be a nurse. Job security and social status play an integral role in a person’s life because a high income leads to job satisfaction and as a result provides high quality of care. Al-Zoubi (2012) states that many practitioners and managers believe that increasing job satisfaction is related to greater financial benefits and salaries, and in addition, employees believe that motivation and providing a high quality of care are reflected in job satisfaction. Baines (2009) states that job security, work-life balance, reputation and supporting the community are some of the driving factors to further a nursing career. Therefore, I understand that quality of life depends on the economic variable which is the job and finances. Thus, pursuing the nursing profession enables to continue earning and making a living.
I realized what I witnessed fell short to the views and expectations of the UK NHS (the UK NHS provides specific standards and expectations of nurses but some of these issues are not addressed or incoporeated in Saudi Arabia nursing profession. For example, compassion and commitment are absent indicate “fell short to the views and expectations of the UK NHS”)(2016). The UK NHS (2016) provides six core values that nurses have to uphold, which are care, compassion, competence, communication, courage, and commitment. These are some of the variables that influenced me in my decision to pursue a nursing qualification such as the university courses and associated experiences. NMC (2010) states that prioritizing people is important, as it increases the values of belief, responsibility, and dignity. Price (2011), a researcher and a former individual with experiences in nursing, presents the virtuous professional characteristics of compassion, and being caring, noble and altruistic, as important in nursing. My exposure to the nursing field and my current experiences in health facilities have cemented my passion for upholding nursing standards and supporting patients and the community.
