Introduction

The aim of this critical professional biography is to demonstrate essential parts of my professional life in order to formulate a critically determined action plan. As Saudi Arabia lacks definite a professional nursing professional body, I have drawn on guidelines and standards, and in order to complete the biography I will draw on the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council (UK NMC) to understand the quality standards and expectation of nursing field. The UK NMC (2010) presents four domains of nursing, which are professional values; nursing practice and decision- making; interpersonal skills and communication; and leadership management and teamwork. I will use these domains as an essential guide to develop critical insight alongside during my professional biography. I will use other different tools including Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (such as SWOT) analysis to qualify my experiences and academic qualifications.

Why I Chose Nursing:

I am a KSA citizen and working in one of the hospitals. I have also pursued a diploma course and a BSc course to fulfill the requirements and expectations of a nurse. However, different factors and issues contributed to my decision to pursue the nursing profession.

The first memory I have of any influence on my choice to become a nurse occurred following a visit to a health care I could not forget something that happened to me when I was at secondary school; I once visited a health care facility. I was visiting a friend at the hospital but what I saw was poor quality services because the nurse was rude, the hospital was dirty, and everything was not on the right track as what I had anticipated such as quality services and empathy from the nurses. I felt pity for the sick people and the others requiring nursing assistance. Looking back, I think my pity was founded on , feelings associated with care and compassion. On reflection, I realized that what I witnessed at secondary school fell short of the views and expectations of the UK NHS. The UK NHS (2016) provides six core values that nurses have to uphold, which are care, compassion, competence, communication, courage, and commitment. I felt that I should be responsible for assisting and caring for the disabled or others that faced different nursing-related challenges and I wished to be one of the nursing team. My passion for values and quality started growing during this period and embracing the cultural diversity also continued to inspire me to adopt nursing fundamentals and to support patients’ and community needs. After visiting my friend at the hospital, I talked with my family about this story to understand their perception of nursing, because the nursing profession is seen to belong more to females than to males in Saudi Arabia setting because of cultural and societal expectations. Felemban, O’Connor, and McKenna (2014) state that, a nursing career is not considered as appropriate as other professions, to male persons. and there is also a poor awareness about nursing in Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, a similar supportive study of Lamadah and Sayed (2014) states that, in Saudi Arabia, the nursing profession is not considered to be a desirable occupation and that refers to a number of factors such as, poorly represented media and lack of career counseling.

Nonetheless, Mmy parents were supportive when I talked to them about nursing but my brothers and sisters were not. supportive. The argument from my brothers and sisters included the fact that nursing is a female based professional; they also expressed and concerns about the responsibilities associated with nursing, such as unpredictable scheduling of duties and working at night. However, my parents wanted the best for me, and allowed me to make personal decisions in my life; they also wanted me to be financially stable.
Clutter (2010), indicates the influence that parents have on motivating their children’s success in school. Parents may lack qualifications or information regarding a subject matter, but they encourage students’ feelings of control and competence and foster positive attitudes towards educational excellence. I can remember the expectations and beliefs of the parents contributing to the students’my level of engagement, and they influenced my their children’s desire to learn. Clutter (2010) supports similar views by tracing the history of past career counseling techniques, and the importance of parents in the formative years of the child. Clutter (2010) concludes that parents play an important role in encouraging, engaging and motivating career choices and educational development. Moreover, Jungen (2008) states that parents influence their children’s career choice in numerous ways, including family values, work ethics, and gender stereotyping. However, the influence of parents on children’s career choice is SA is not a simple matter. As noted by Alsaedy (2015) Parents in Saudi Arabia have the responsibilities of guiding and providing support to their children, which is intertwined with numerous processes and components such as religion, culture and societal expectations interlink to underpin what is considered acceptable (Alsaedy, 2015). My parents influenced my decision to pursue nursing and acquire the necessary qualifications. As a result, I became extremely confident and proud of my decision. Financial security and job security weare also some of the factors that influenced me to be a nurse. Job security and social status play an integral role in a person’s life because a high income leads to job satisfaction and as a result, provides a high quality of care. Al-Zoubi (2012) states that many practitioners and managers believe that increasing job satisfaction is related to greater financial benefits and salaries. In addition, employees believe that motivation and providing a high quality of care are reflected in job satisfaction. Baines (2009) states that job security, work-life balance, reputation and supporting the community are some of the driving factors to further a nursing career. Therefore, I understand that quality of life depends on economic variables, such as career and finances. Thus, pursuing the nursing profession enables me to continue learning and making a living.

Some of the challenges associated with a shortage of nurses include sociocultural factors, cultural and communal values, community image such as nurse roles should be played by women, mixing of different genders such as females providing services to male patients and vice versa, and long working hours (Hellerawa and Adambarage, 2015). While aware of these challenges I decided to pursue a career in nursing to provide quality care and to improve overall health care in order to help and support the Saudi population and country. As a result, I am extremely confident and proud of my decision.

Career Paths:

In order to work as a nurse, I needed to have BSc qualifications. Before pursuing any nursing course, there are regulations and standards, which I was required to meet. I applied to Taif Health Institute, and the institution allowed me to pursue the nursing qualifications.

During the Diploma of Nursing period, I ensured that I understood the knowledge and education of the nursing profession. I employed Bloom’s Taxonomy (1956) which discusses the Bloom’s Taxonomy of education objectives by outlining the cognitive learning expectations. The cognitive learning components are creating, evaluating, analyzing, applying, understanding and remembering. Employing these techniques enabled me to acquire the prerequisite educational requirements and the knowledge required.

My first experience was three years in the emergency department in the trauma and observation area. I learned many things, such as dealing with a variety of cases and different cultures, dealing with people with different nationalities and international and with international staff. However, in the beginning, I faced many challenges and difficulties such as the English language barrier, which affected my communication with colleagues and physicians. For example, nursing and health profession requires an understanding of medical terminologies, which meant that I had to learn normal English and English premised on medical requirements. I appreciated the importance of effective communication. Nadzam (2009) analyzed the importance of effective communication and patient safety and stated that effective communication among the different stakeholders is important because it helps them to determine the medical and health requirements of the patient. It ensures quality health provision through collecting and appreciating feedback from the stakeholders. I embraced effective communication because I was able to relate and talk with different stakeholders, such as patients, family, and caregivers, incorporating the diverse backgrounds of these individuals.

However, I faced other challenges with communication because I was not able to appreciate the diverse backgrounds of patients in the decision-making process. Why was this can you give a, for instance, LEZakel’s Channel (2011) discusses Johari Window’s model, which presents some of the issues that affect the communication processes. The Johari Window model presents self-disclosure, the blind, the hidden and the unknown. For example, relating symptoms to a medical problem was an issue because different cultures viewed symptoms differently. For instance, mental problems are viewed differently in Western countries compared to Saudi Arabia because of the role of the family in guiding societal requirements. Even though I faced these challenges, which I was able to address, I still appreciated the views of Casey and Wallis (2011). Casey and Wallis (2011) discussed effective communication and provided a framework that nurses can employ for fulfilling their roles and responsibilities at the workplace. Some of the factors that the authors present include documentation, reporting and handling complaints. I was able to employ these guidelines to ensure that the health care provision reflected the requirements and expectations of different stakeholders including patients, family, and the community.

By the end of the third year in ER, I had improved my knowledge and skills and became more confident since I received positive feedback from the management and customers. However, the one-day nursing administration office assigned a new male nurse to be an emergency charge nurse. The male nurse was junior to me, as he had less than two years’ experience, while I had almost three. I complained, and the management informed me that the new male nurse had a Bachelor’s Degree, which was superior to my Diploma Certification. I was unhappy because of the views from the management and decided I will improve my qualifications so that I will be given promotion.

This stand motivated and influenced me to study for a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. My next plan of action was to apply for a scholarship, but from the emergency department, it would be difficult because there were many competitive staff members who would also apply, and my chances were low. Therefore, I made a decision and requested to be transferred to a surgical ward as there were no Saudi Arabians employed in the department. Assiri et al. (2014) analyzed the deficiency in experienced nurses and the lack of effective infection control programs in Saudi Arabia. This may be associated with the lack of skills, experiences, and infrastructure, meaning that engagement and developmental policies are required to address the current problems in the surgical wards in Saudi Arabia. Fortunately, my request was accepted, and I worked in a surgical ward. I applied for the scholarship, and during my work in the surgical ward, I learned a variety of skills such as dealing with different types of surgery cases. My communication also improved because I communicated with other departments such as theatre, radiology, laboratory and pharmacy staff, and my knowledge and skills improved: in particular my leadership skills.

I understood the meaning of teamwork. Curtis et al. (2011) argue that the leadership credentials of nurses have to be fostered throughout the development of the nurse. In the teamwork section, I learned that the role of a leader is an integral component in advancing the requirements of the team and achieving the expected outcome. The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (2013) states that a team leader nurse must exhibit problem-solving and communications skills, must understand the dynamism of the health sector, delegate responsibilities, enhance nurse quality, encourage professional development and instigate change. While working in the surgical ward, I had the chance to be a head nurse; this was a large significant challenge for me. Silva et al. (2010) carried out a study to understand the challenges that novice nurses (I was moving to a different phase of nursing) faces and they documented the challenges related to competence, technical ability and the leadership of a team. Silva et al. (2010) state asserted that novice nurses are unable to provide leadership requirements, due to their lack of experience and skills. Even though I faced some of these challenges, I was able to address them because of my experience in different departments and my engagement with other stakeholders. I learned what constituted leadership, responsibility, delegation of duties and other factors associated with being a leader.
Harrison, (2010) discusses the components of SWOT analysis and states that the tool is appropriate for determining strengths and opportunities. I used it to address my weaknesses and threats. The experiences and shortcomings during the leadership position and other workplace- related requirements motivated me to improve my skills and competencies.
