Plagiarism

There are multiple concerns about the participation of plagiarism in the textual revolution culture. Nowadays, the internet and other literature materials are described as the main cause of plagiarism, the existence of the plagiarism detecting machines has been seen as the best possible mechanism of dealing with plagiarism. Students in the UK have to understand the main role of the internet as not just a means for accessing the texts but rather the relationship that exists between the texts and the original writers of the materials. In this paper, the reasons behind the increase in plagiarism, its definition and how to reduce plagiarism will be discussed.

Plagiarism is an act of taking somebody’s work like presentations, essays, dissertations or reports and passing them off as his or her own work (insert Citation). Plagiarism can be accidental or intentionally but it is still considered as a form of cheating that normally occurs when a student when a certain student is independently working on a school assignment. Some of the examples of plagiarism include:

  1. Using information from someone else’s work without using any quotation marks or acknowledging the original source,

  2. Making a summary of someone’s work without acknowledging the work

  3. Using ideas of someone’s work without having the need of acknowledging it and

  4. Copying a fellow student’s ideas without telling or acknowledging him or her.

A feeling of an upcoming doom hangs over the field of academic as plagiarism threatens to actually undo the academic enterprise. According to Brian Kates (2013) there should be significant concerns about how plagiarism is affecting the education sector. Most students have realized that plagiarism is the quickest mode of dealing with the headache of assignments. With access to internet and other reading resources, most online companies are able to provide the student in the UK with everything that they need to research in the internet for a fairly cheaper price. An academic essay by Annette C Rosati in (2012) stated that the modern day students are doing thorough researches, looking for the materials to plagiarize or doing some critical thinking. Karla Saari Kitalong (2010) asserts that students looking for materials to plagiarize as the more critical reason why students tend to deliver perfect work.

It is believed that the internet being a very rich repository for all the online work provides the highest opportunity for plagiarism. Thomas Atkins (2011) highlighted that there are around three hundred cheat sites available in the internet to add to the billions of pages available in the internet. The main reason for the rising plagiarism cases in the UK schools is attributed to the existence of the internet making it possible for the access of the material that are ready to be plagiarized (Jeffrey, 2012). Most teachers in recent years are becoming increasingly frustrated with their students and are constantly findings strategies to cheat in their assignments by plagiarizing the work of other students. According to Stevenson (2014), there is a possibility that a student can easily procure an entire paper in the internet or make an order of a paper that is custom written for a specific topic. It is no longer a hidden fact but plagiarism in the academic field is on the rise.

The other reason why plagiarism is on the rise is its relative simplicity in work completion. Evidently, 30 years ago, plagiarism was very difficult as one had to visit the library, find the needed sources in which to copy from, retype the acquired sources and finally restructure the sources into their own. Instead of going through the above process, students considered doing a non plagiarized work because they felt like there is a little advantage in risking the punishment and shame that comes with plagiarism. With the availability of the internet, finding the source is very easy; where copying and pasting takes very few seconds. This has made the act of plagiarism very easy and a really good time saver. The education ethics might not have changed but technology has lessenedplagiarism tactics. Other common factors that leads to the increase in plagiarism are:

  1. Improving detection in plagiarism: improved crime reports can sometimes lead to the increase in the rates of crime; this means that the ability of catching plagiarists by the detection devices has led to individuals knowing more about plagiarism.

  2. Attitude change: the change of attitude in how most of the students in the UK are approaching their assignments has also played a role in increasing the rate of plagiarism.

  3. A change in the academic environment: the larger classes available in most learning institution have created a perception in the mind of the students that cheating is a necessity and that they can always get away with cheating.

Conclusion

The described factors play a major role regarding the continued rise in plagiarism in UK schools, where technology plays the biggest role in terms of supporting plagiarism. These does not mean that the teachers and lectures should resolve to eliminate technology from learning institutions but rather develop ways in which technology can be used in a more productive way. Some of the ways of combating plagiarism is to request for handwritten materials, choose only plagiarism titles or topics and keep on requiring multiple drafts. Evidently, plagiarism is a plague in the learning institutions and all possible strategies need to be incorporated in curbing its continued rise.
