Performance of Arawang Primary School as an Organization

The performance of any organization is determined by the returns it makes; monetary and product market performance (Richard et al. 2009). Occasionally, the performances of the organization need to be assessed to ensure the goals and objectives of the organization are being achieved (Sharpe 2001). For instance, this can be premeditated or implicit. This paper will analyze the performance of the Arawang Primary School, Waramanga, as an organization. Being a large organization that caters for the needs of children, Arawang Primary School has been able to achieve a number of landmarks in its growth and mission.

This school was established in the 20th century after the merger between Fisher and Waramanga Primary Schools of Weston Creek. It offers a diverse range of learning opportunities for children with an aim of providing quality education for everyone. Over the years, the school has been able to establish an outreach program and has managed to form a sister relationship with Obwororo Academy in Kenya. This has provided an opportunity for the children to interact with other children from a developing country. This exposure contributes towards their understanding and ability to embrace diversity and comprehend the importance of inclusivity.

There has been a steady enrolment program in the school over the years. In addition, a number of parents from different parts have apparently chosen to enroll their children in this school. Various factors could be said to contribute to this, for instance, the availability of a well-structured music program, which enables the children to learn and explore various avenues in music. Additionally, the aspect of single classrooms ensures that every child has special attention from the teachers. Currently, the school has a population of approximately 476 students. With a well-structured teaching and subordinate staff, every student is assured of effective services.

Furthermore, the school has put in place pedagogical approaches, which have enhanced its teaching approaches. For instance, the teaching staff in the school can provide professional value teaching, which centers its attention on providing an objective literacy and numeracy harmonization. This has provided mentoring opportunities for the students by the teachers who help them in their learning. According to a report by the Board, Arawang Primary School has implemented this approach in its curriculum. This approach has contributed towards an improvement in the performance of the school.

An assessment was made to evaluate the numeracy skills of the students using the Performance Indicator in Primary School (PIPS) program (Board Report, 2011, p. 6), the outcome is as indicated in the graph below;

Additionally, the school curriculum has been structured to accommodate diverse activities like participation in competitions that build the children’s communication skills; public speaking competitions and weekend sports within the locality of the school, which contributes to the children’s development in sports. These activities have been major contributors for the development of the school in that; it has enabled the school officials to develop good relations with the community members.

Parents also play a vital role in the development of the children; they act as stakeholders in the school. They participate in the school’s activities in different ways, which has enabled the school to grow and affect its services to the children. For example, in 2009, the school was designated the best P&C in the ACT. Moreover, there is a newsletter for parents, which has seemingly improved communication between the parents and the school. This is usually published once every term. This helps to keep parents in the knowhow of the activities and events of the school. This aspect has strengthened the support for the school by the community as well. Community members are free to contribute for the improvement of the school. As an organization, Arawang Primary Scholl has managed to establish a good relationship with its clients and the community around; an aspect that is essential in public relations.

Moreover, the school has been able to offer financial support for children with disabilities. In 2008, it incorporated Waramanga and Weston Preschools and an Early Intervention Unit. This was in support of the children with exceptional requirements. This was in an attempt to cater for the changing student population and to attain the ACT policy of ‘every chance to learn’. The school curriculum has also been designed for teachers to formulate programs that will enable them cater for the students at individual and group level. The effect of this is evident through the inquisition units and term overviews from the evaluation and reporting processes, which have formulated to evaluate the effectiveness of the strategy (ACT Department, 2010, p. 2).

Communication policies had been set up to enhance the communication of the school and other partners; this was achieved through the P&C program and the set up of a website, which enabled the community to keep in touch with the school. Moreover, the generation of a newsletter every term has played a major role in enhancing communication. On an organizational basis, communication is always considered paramount. The ability to establish a practical system of communication enables an organization to obtain information, which plays a vital role in the formulation of strategies. Feedback is also obtained from the consumers of the services being offered, this eventually helps in the improvement of service delivery.

Infrastructure in the school is highly improved. Classrooms have been improved by the setting up of elegant boards and evaporative coolers, which have helped to provide a favorable learning atmosphere for the children. Additionally, the library has advanced to enable the students acquire necessary equipment for learning. These factors contribute toward the growth and development of the students. Overly, in an organizational set up, the efficiency and effectiveness of the employees and customers alike majorly depends on their ability to access equipment that enables them to perform (Young 2005). This infrastructure enables teachers and students to achieve their goal of effective learning and improved performance.

The financial performance of any organization is vital to its operations and outcomes. Arawang Primary School often has annual monetary reports, which reflect on its operational costs. In 2011, the school was able to receive a lump sum of funding from charitable contributions, which enabled it to conduct its operations effectively (Board Report, 2011, p.14).
