Patient safety is one of the critical and pressing issues in relation to the health sector and delivery of healthcare services to the consumers. Patient safety is critical towards the achievement of quality healthcare programs and services to the patients. Evidence-based service delivery in the health sector focuses on the concept of patient safety in relation to the various consumers thus enhancing the relationship between the users and providers. This research will focus on reviewing three critical articles with reference to patient safety. This will include two qualitative and one quantitative research articles.

Evidence-based service delivery in the health sector focuses on the concept of patient safety in relation to the various consumers thus enhancing the relationship between the users and providers. Various researchers have focused on the concept of patient safety because of its influence in realization of the effective and efficient healthcare delivery to the patients. This research will focus on reviewing three critical articles with reference to patient safety. This will include two qualitative and one quantitative research articles.
Parand et al, (2011, p. 1184-1190) focused on the execution of a quantitative research entitled: the disparity of frontline clinical staff and manager’ perceptions of a quality and patient safety initiative. The main aim of this research was to offer valuable and critical comparison of the clinical frontline staff and senior managers’ perceptions in relation to the importance of an organization-wide quality and safety collaborative (Parand et al, 2011, p. 1184). This is through illustration of the concept of the Safer Patients Initiative (SPI). According to the background information, a shared perspective between clinical staff and their managers in relation to the improvement initiative would facilitate more effective implementation as well as achievement of the program success. The driving objective of the research was the fact that research has failed to differentiate between the managers and line employees with reference to quality management implementation.
The research used random sampling method with control mechanisms in order to address the research questions and objectives. The methodology applicable in the case of executing this research was a quantitative approach. This is through administration of 635 surveys at 20 trusts that participated in the SPI program within the nursing practice. The participants composed of teams and frontline staff integrated within the program at each relevant organization (Parand et al, 2011, p. 1185). The researchers integrated T-tests between the frontline staff and senior managers’ perceptions of the SPI program elements, implications, success factors, and the aspect of sustainability.
According to the results of this critical research, there is a statistical significant difference in relation to the perceptions of the senior managers and frontline staff in relation to number of issues. One of the issues in the findings of the research included significant improvement in relation to the perception of the frontline staff on the timeliness delivery of care. The researchers indicate that managers’ perceptions were significant with reference to the culture in the organization for safety as well as effectiveness and reliability of care to the patients.
The results of the study were crucial in illustration of diversity between managers and clinical frontline staff in relation to the aspect of SPI. Another critical finding indicates that the frontline staff and management agreed to the program led to improvement through a vertical approach thus from the senior management or managers to the clinical frontline staff. According to the research, the researchers discovered statistically significant disparities in relation to the perceptions of frontline staff and senior managers with reference to an organization-wide improvement. Stevenson & Nilsson (2012 p. 667-676) also focused execution of a qualitative research entitled nurses’ perceptions of an electronic patient record from a patient safety perspective: a qualitative study. The main aim of this research was to evaluate and explore nurses’ perceptions of integrating electronic patient record in relation to everyday’s application in the general ward settings. The research was crucial in demonstrating the patient safety elements in the execution of the qualitative research. According to the background information, electronic patient records are applicable thus becoming the main method in relation to nursing documentation. The evidence illustrates that the electronic patient records fail to capture the concept of clinical practice and support for the users in the form of nurses. This is an indication that the integration of the electronic patient records in the clinical and nursing practice needed critical and further evaluation and study (Stevenson & Nilsson, 2012 p. 667).
The researchers focused on the integration of random sampling with the aim of eliminating biasness while enhancing credibility and reliability of the research findings. The study is a qualitative research approach, which utilized focus group interviews in relation to 21 registered nurses. The researchers also focused on the integration of content analysis to evaluate and analysis the findings of the qualitative research. The research was critical in utilizing the electronic patient records having been under application for one year.
According to the findings of the research, the researchers indicate that patient safety could undergo clustering in one main category. This relates to the documentation in everyday’s application. The findings also indicate the aspect of categorizing patient safety into three critical sub-categories: overview, vital signs, and medication module. The researchers also indicate the perception of the nurses on the electronic patient record with reference to lack of support to nursing practice in documentation of the crucial patient information. For instance, in recording patient information such as vital signs, there is no support to the nursing practice (Stevenson & Nilsson, 2012 p. 669).
Under the discussion, the researchers focus on the illustration of limitations relating to inability to make substantive generalizations from the findings of the study. This is because of the ability of the research to evaluate and explore the views of only 21 registered nurses. There is also the need to note that the research utilized only one electronic record system within the context or the site of research in one medium-sized hospital in Southeast Sweden. The findings of the research offer valuable insight in relation to the perceptions of the nurses in integrating EPR in the context of general wards. Effective integration of the EPR in the ward settings would be ideal to enhance the patient safety in the healthcare sector. The researchers note the need to execute an extensive research exercises with the aim of incorporating the views of numerous nurses as they utilize electronic patient record systems in the ward settings (Stevenson & Nilsson, 2012 p. 673).
The research concludes the need for efforts in integrating the views of the nurses in relation to designing an electronic patient record with the aim of ensuring that it suits the needs of nursing practice. Electronic patient records must also offer support to the realization of the patient safety. This is because of the need to enhance accessibility of the essential patient information for enhancing decision-making process by managers and nursing staff (Stevenson & Nilsson, 2012 p. 676).
Vaismoradi et al (2011, p. 401-411), focused on execution on the research entitled patients’ understandings and feelings of safety during hospitalization in Iran: a qualitative study. The main objective or aim of this research was to explore and evaluate the patients’ understandings and feelings of the aspect and elements of safety during hospitalization. This research notes that patient safety is one of the crucial and critical issues in relation to realization of quality healthcare services and products to the patients in the context of Iran. The article defines patient safety as the aspect of preventing adverse events to the patients in association with health care.
The research focused on integration of the concept of qualitative research with the aim the aim of incorporating purposive sampling method. The research utilized 19 participants: 8 female and 11 male participants. In order to gather substantive research data, the researchers focused on integration of thematic analysis approach in gathering and analyzing information in accordance to understandings and feelings of 19 patients in the medical and surgical wards in the context of a teaching hospital in an urban area, Iran (Vaismoradi et al, 2011, p. 402). Following the application of purposive sampling method in relation to the selection of the 19 participants, the researchers constructed semi-structured interviews for the data collection process.
Data analysis was crucial in the development and emergence of three main themes. The first theme of interest following the collection and analysis of data was the aspect of attention to recovery this becoming hopeful of life while maintaining the life routines. The second critical theme emanating from data analysis consisted of not to be forgotten as well as developing an optimistic approach towards health care settings. The third thematic issue was integration of mechanism with the aim of improving the feeling of safety by the hospitalized patients by considering the patient as a whole thus incorporation of the humanistic approach of patient care. The researchers also note that the nurses need to focus on learning leadership aspects such as roles in relation to realizing the goals and objectives of patient safety (Vaismoradi et al, 2011, p. 404). The researchers in this experiment or qualitative approach define patient safety as the prevention of adverse events in relation to the patients within the context of healthcare sector.
This is through illustration of the degree to which patients do not suffer from negative influences as they seek medical care. The main objective of the patient safety is to address the needs and preferences of the users as well as improvement of service delivery by the providers. The qualitative research notes the need to understand and feel the patient safety while visiting health centers. The research also notes the influence of ethical considerations following the approval of the qualitative approach by the Ethics Committee and the Research Council in association with Tehran University of Medical Sciences.
The research concludes that there is a critical need for improvement o the feeling of safety by the hospitalized patients through integration of humanistic aspect of the patient care as well as consideration of the patient as a whole conceptualization. The significance of this study relates to its ability to focus on the patients’ perspectives in the case of Iran as well as international studies. The findings of the research are crucial in the development of a national-level strategy for the improvement of patient safety and feeling of the safety by the hospitalized patients (Vaismoradi et al, 2011, p. 410).
