LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT DEVELOPMENT

Leadership and Management Development

Leadership and Management Development

Introduction

Leadership and management play a vital role in the health sector. The choice of a leader determines the productivity of a health care organization and the well-being of all individuals that work in or procure services from it.

Recent research indicates that 1300 hospitals in Europe and the United States have demonstrated that clinically qualified leaders shape well-managed health care settings with great standard patient care. The performance of disengaged staff can be increased by 57% due to encouragement from leaders. The alliance between individual and corporate objective results in improved effort by 28%. 39% effort, improvement of the employee results from provision of unprejudiced, fair, and accurate feedback from the leader. There is need for clinicians to better their leadership skills for the sake of their organizations. This involves influencing the staff through decision making among other leadership skills (Health, 2012a).

The importance of involving clinicians in leadership is vital for the following reasons: clinical decision makers determine prospects to save cost, lack of clinical skills results in leadership and development issues, and budget issues are determined by senior clinicians (Health, 2012b). The reduction in nursing staff turnover and progress of nurse retention rates are key objectives of leadership. Reduction of the staff burnout and absenteeism associated with nurses are crucial roles of nurse managers. When nurse managers make use of their skilled conflict resolution tactics, staff nurses record improved levels of work fulfillment (Nelsey & Brownie, 2012).

Conclusion

It is apparent from the extract that engaging clinicians in leadership and management development is of capital importance. This is because it results in a better work environment for staff members and safeguards the well-being of the society in general. Leadership comes with responsibility and challenges.
