Overview of Starbucks

Starbucks Corporation was founded in 1971 when it opened its first store in Washington. Since this foundation, the company has risen and become one of the leading retailer of coffee in the world with its reach extending to 39 countries where it has over 13,000 outlets (Starbucks, 2007). According to Panmore Institute (2015), Starbucks represents the world’s leading coffeehouse chain. The company has distinguished itself from its competitors because of its strong organizational culture, values, mission, vision, and structure.

Starbucks mission statement is a reflection of the company’s strong desire to connect with people. In one of the sections in its website, Starbucks refers to itself as “partners” because it does not consider itself as ‘job’ but as a ‘passion’ (Starbucks, 2016). This enthusiasm, in addition to partners’ participation in training in product expertise, and customer service makes a very great impact on its customer service. Starbucks employees have a strong experience in company’s stores. The company requires it partners not only to have the personality and skills to communicate well with customers, but also to be highly experienced in the company’s products (Bussing-Burks, 2009).

Most of Starbucks’ success is associated with the appropriateness of its organizational structure. The structure of an organization is the most important thing because it influences all variables that are critical to the organization, including the management, communication, and change among other factors (Panmore Institute, 2015). Starbucks’ organizational structure transforms itself with the growth in business and this enables the company to optimize processes, products, and services. Starbucks’ organizational structure is a mixture of different features, including functional structure, geographical divisions, teams, and product-based divisions.

Starbucks have a great workplace environment such that many people desire to work at Starbucks. Starbucks is ranked as one of the companies among the 100 best Fortune companies to work for and it earns this position rightfully (Bussing-Burks, 2009). One of the facts that make people to desire to work at Starbucks is the consideration it gives to its employees. First, instead of hiring people as employees, the company hires people as partners. A focus on teams represents an important factor of Starbuck’s organizational culture. The company believes that satisfied customers always come back and that customer satisfaction is dependent on the attitude of employees. Therefore, the company strives to always keep its employees happy through motivation (Starbucks, 2016). The result of highly motivated staff leads to high customer return rate. The company holds its partners in high regard, providing opportunities for skills development, opportunities to advance their careers, and to achieve their goals. Majority of employees at Starbucks are employed on part-time basis. Despite being part-time employees, the company considers them to be the source of its success, thus treating them with respect. Some of the benefits offered to the employees for motivation include healthcare benefits, stock purchase plans and options (Bean Stock) which are highly discounted (Bussing-Burks, 2009).

Over the recent years, the company has made several initiatives to enhance the in-store experience, including offering its customers with places where they can charge their laptops and wireless hotspots (Adbrands, 2007). Other initiatives include the introduction of pre-payment cards, entertainment.
