OD Interventions: Strategies and Structures
The organization’s general environment constitutes all the external forces that affect the organization and its departments directly or in directly. Examples include technology, economic, social, political, ecological components. Each of these factors affect the organization differently for example recession in the country directly affects demand of commodities by consumers. The general environment affects the organization indirectly by providing a linkage between the organization and the external agents. For instance disputes between consumers and suppliers will affect the process of raw materials procurement.
Organization may apply various responses towards environmental demands. The first one is by use of scanning units whereby the organization will engage experts to gather and interpret information that relates to the organization’s survival and growth and use it in decision making. The other strategy is the use of collective structure whereby an organization co-ordinates with other organizations to help establish interdependence among organizations. The last strategy is by use of proactive responses where the organization tries to influence the external forces to favor its operations.
Transorganizational systems are associated with the joining together of groups of organizations with a common purpose to form a functional social system that makes decisions and performs tasks on behalf of its member organizations. The first stage if TS is the identification stage which entails identification of potential member organization. The next stage is the convention stage which is concerned with assessment of the feasibility of creating a TS. Organization stage is the third stage where structure and mechanisms are established to start up the TS. The final one is the evaluation stage which assesses the performance of the TS. Whereas OD’s are highly organized, TS’s are characterized by loosely coupled relationships among the organizations.
Downsizing is strategy of reducing costs and bureaucracy by reducing personnel hence the size of the organization. Re-engineering involves redesigning the organization work structure in order to provide tighter co-ordination and linkages among the departments. Both strategies are aimed at providing a work structure that is more flexible and integrative. However, they differ in the purpose they are used for instance; downsizing is aimed at reducing costs while re-engineering seeks to transform the process of production of goods and services.
The first approach to work design is the engineering approach which proposes that an effective work design is achieved when work methods, task to be performed and work flow are properly specified. The second approach is the motivational approach whereby an effective work design is viewed as a function of employee satisfaction. The last approach is the sociotechnical systems approach which argues that a work unit is a combination of social and technical systems.
Integration of the work designs ensures that all the different social and growth needs of the employees are catered for hence providing a work environment where the effort of each employee is recognized no matter how small it is. This integration is also appropriate in enhancing technical interdependence and technical uncertainty in the organization which is prevalent in today’s work places.
