Introduction

Based on the empirical studies, the air craft industry specifically the air traffic management area have been undergoing some changes that are said to bring a transformation in the industry in a span of 5 years. Therefore NATS has a major role to play to maintain its existence in the market as it is known to be the best with the air craft management services involving managing some of the most complex airspace in the world. Herein organizational behavior comes in here to help NATS achieve these changes since it’s the study of activities and performance within an organizational level. The main agents to ensure this goal is achieved is the organization’s work force who are the employees hence how they behave towards these changes and how willing they are then it becomes an easy thing to achieve.

Discussion

NATS prides on its recognition to delivering the best and safest services in the U.K. and for it to maintain its position in the market and for purposes of commercial growth in the business, by focusing on meeting the needs of the customers will bring a difference between it from its Competitors. Therefore, for the purpose of managing the challenge of air traffic, concepts that will deliver SES and SESAR will be implemented, they involve; continuing to listen to customers and responding to them accordingly, delivering operational services to pilots, airlines and airports that consists of separation and network management, air navigation information and alerting and support; introducing SESAR concept of trajectory –based operations (Buchanan & Huczynski, 2010);ensuring employees are ready to work differently and finally equipping ,aligning and committing them to delivering these changes.

Problems

Against that background there are some challenges that NATS is experiencing that need to be prioritized .this is especially because it’s a leading air traffic management, unique in the world as it is owned by a partnership between the government and shareholders, unlike the rest which are just owned by the government.

The measures and the concepts being employed to bring about these changes will change how the air craft is being managed, increase competition in the market and also reduce the dependence on the nationally board (ANSPs) which is a challenge for NATS..

Another challenge that is being faced by NATS is that of its customers demanding for lower prices as well as reduced fuel burn without compromising delay and safety performance. Working towards implementing the concepts that will ease air traffic management is essential for the organization as it has to major on dealing with the workforce involved in achieving these, by making them embrace the change and make them focus on attaining the goals of NATS. The challenging bit about it is that the employees were already used to certain ways of doing things and now transforming them to doing things differently becomes a task for the organization.

On the other hand, NATS will also need to incur an extra cost that is approximately 600m dollars to transform the technological infrastructure. In relation to the employees’ dimension NATS will also be required to equip the employees with the necessary information on how to go about the changes, ensuring that it is Cleary understood how they are going to do things differently from the way they were used to (Kreitner, et al 2012).

Solutions/Recommendations

Based these changes in the aviation industry, challenges have arisen from that especially for NATS .therefore some of the solutions that have been employed to deal with this issue include: employing trajectory –based operations ,by increasing the data received from the aircraft, new systems and tools are developed enabling processing and understanding of data hence a swift journey, reduction of holding stacks, noise impacts, ability to determine which routes, save on fuel and environment and help with the en-route or cruising face of flight (Huczynski & Buchanan, 2009). NATS is ensuring that its working personnel is well equipped, trained and motivated, aligned and committed, having a significant percentage of the existing air-traffic controllers and engineers and enhancement of better management integrated approach .

Conclusion

As revealed in the above discussion, in order for NATS to maintain its market position and to meet up the requirements of SESAR with the unprecedented changes that are bound to happen in 5-10 years, It has recognized the need to innovate ways on how to deal with these changes and also ensure it meets the demands of its customers. Therefore it has engaged in some measures that will look into equipping its employees who are the key players in achieving this. However, I would recommend on Maslow’s hierarchy of need approach as it focuses on what motivates an individual and it is known that, Motivated employees are more quality oriented and are more productive., these motivations include meeting these needs; physiological needs that are the basic needs; safety needs; social needs, esteem and self-actualization needs. For that reason, NATS will continue leading since it would have met the requirements of the SESAR.
