Similarities and differences in operation command between mechanical and information age


  1. Both ages have specialization in the military affairs. This enabled work efficiency and career training in different department. E.g. Information Age is during an integrated air operation. This will involve intelligence on air defenses and command, detailed plans, aircraft control and command, assessment of battle damage, search and organization of rescue. In Mechanical Age this can be well illustrated by the famous Alexander the Great army which was specialized in a way that each group had a line of attacking and defending.

  2. Co-ordination in the battlefield is common in both ages. In Mechanical Ages militaries, each group was assigned specific tasks which were well organized to accomplish the mission. Information Age, various control measures like the boundaries being specified for each unit, on aircraft there would be altitude restriction. Military commanders control what happens in their respective area where responsible.

  3. In planning both ages had planning which were centralized. The commander of each military group received instructions from the central administration. Though it was mainly used in the mechanical age.

  4. Decentralization still remains the main methods of execution during war in both ages. This enabled each unit to specialize in its field as each had the right weapon for its mission.

  5. Tactics used in war in both ages are similar in many ways. The use of guerrilla warfare is an outstanding feature in both ages. Propaganda is another familiar tactic used.

  6. Psychological warfare is common in both ages. In Mechanical Age Genghis Khan is well known to have used this tactics. Presently it is seen where some countries are seen to be superpowers and control other countries indirectly.

  7. In both ages, weapons handled by military men are used. This includes aviation weapons which have continued to develop to more sophisticated ones.

  8. War casualties were reported in both ages. Though the Mechanical age were more as compared to Information Age.

  9. Both ages had reasons for war that is reasons to establish a military group which was equipped. In both cases, one of the main reasons is quest for power.


Information Age

Mechanical Age

Less of manpower input. This due to weapons advancement as technology has become less manual, therefore less military men deployed.

More manpower input. Many military men were deployed during wars as technology was still advancing.

Advancement in training has been made. The gadgets offer the trainees the real scenario in a begnin and controlled environment

Training was not intensive. The military men used less sophisticated training facilitate and mostly lacked advance protective devices or gears

Transport has advanced and land warfare have specialized vehicles for locomotion.

Land warfare mainly amounted to military man own strength of locomotion.

The organization and ranking is known to be hierarchical

Ranks were in order of either the weapons they men used or the fighting capabilities

Information is being transmitted within a short duration of time and for long distances without any alteration to its meaning and also its clarity.

Transmission of Information took time and alteration of the meaning was common. Clarity was minimal.

Reasons for war range from resources control e.g. in Congo in Africa where different powers are fighting over the mining regions. Political interest and power.

Mainly fought to protect their women and hunting grounds. Others reason included power, thirst to conquer and rule other tribe.

Need for direct contact is minimal. Few casualties.

Direct contact with enemies. War casualties were therefore many.

Increased participants towards national and international unity and harmony due to availability of information.

Harmonization was minimal and less international unity mainly due to scarcity of information.

Less constraint of general information based on the national boundaries by the government.

Government did restrict the information within the country territory and not beyond.

Better communication and transmission devices are put in place. This has led to first communication of information.

Communication was slow due to lack of advanced communication devices. Locally made modes of communication were used.

Time management is efficiently carried due to the use of advanced technology.

Time management was not carried out efficiently as most of the work was done manually.

There are no set dates for fighting with the opponents or arranged battlefield.

In most cases wars were arranged and specific places were declared as battlefield.

The military is composed of both military men and women though only men mainly go to war.

Military composed of men and women were rarely recruited in the army.
