On Becoming Creative

This paper examines the role of creativity in business and how to produce creative work that is now rarely disputed particularly in an economy that is constantly driven by information and rapid change. Training in creativity and innovation has been considered a key factor in traditional business functions. However, companies find it involving to measure the results of training, and thus are hesitant to encourage creative expressions in all work roles. In this paper, a psychological framework for understanding the creative has been discussed in detail based on Carl Rodger’s Internal Conditions for Creativity. By focusing on extensionality, for example, being Open to Experience, practicing Internal Locus of Evaluation and Toying with Elements and Concepts, the paper shows how it is important to nurture creativity by developing permeable boundaries, to create complex situations and safe psychological spaces. Toying with ideas and self-evaluation has been pointed out as key approach to developing creative minds among the individuals.

Based on Carl Rodger’s view of the internal conditions for creativity, it is true that the process of becoming creative begins with the presence of creative drive in an individual. Therefore, it is relevant to support Kim Law MacManus’ idea that if genuine efforts are made to encourage creativity, the creative process would become a lifelong approach to enhancing personal fulfilment and self-expressions among individuals (MacManus, 1999). Generally, this paper provides key lessons for organizations to learn about the value of nurturing creative ideas and having permeable boundaries. In order to encourage creativity and innovation, it is apparent that work organizations that put into practice the lessons highlighted in the psychological research about creative process have the capability to attract and keep creative individuals. This implies that nurturing creativity involves developing the creative potential of each and every individual in the organization. Therefore, it cannot be doubted that structures and processes that create permeable boundaries as well as encourage complexity and provide safe psychological spaces would help to nurture creativity.
